Engineering and Management

The SDM program was created in 1996, in response to a critical need expressed by government and industry to provide future engineering leaders with an educational experience that combines an engineering systems perspective with the essentials of a management education. The program has focused on developing competencies in the areas of systems thinking, management skills, leadership, and an end-to-end understanding of systems development.

SDM provides a global mindset; a systems thinking perspective that integrates management, technology, and social sciences; and ways to lead across organizational and cultural boundaries to address rapidly accelerating complexity and change in today's global markets.

Successful SDM applicants demonstrate strong leadership potential, systems thinking capability and the propensity to excel in integrating engineering and management.

Since 1990, when US News & World Report created its annual evaluation of US graduate school programs, MIT’s School of Engineering has achieved the top score in the rankings each year. In the most recent rankings, MIT Sloan jumped from fifth to third among the nation’s MBA programs, according to the magazine. Sloan’s specialty programs in information systems, production/operations, and supply chain/logistics were again ranked first.
