The degree combines the natural and social sciences with engineering and medicine in a truly interdisciplinary manner.
It is the route to a successful career in environment and sustainability, as demonstrated by the achievements of around 3,000 alumni who have graduated since 1978. Many of these are internationally recognised leaders in their field, reflecting their training on a world-renowned course.
The first term core course comprises modules in:
- Ecology
- Environmental pollution and control
- Environmental policy and management
- Environmental law
- Environmental economics
- Research methods
- Risk assessment
This broad training is followed by an in-depth education in many specialised areas, maintaining the course's interdisciplinary nature. The specialist options in the second term are designed to cater for a variety of individual interests and career requirements.
A strong case-study approach is employed with emphasis on working in teams, decision-making, analytical skills and report preparation. The eight specialist options currently offered on the course include:
- Business and environment
- Ecological management
- Energy policy
- Environmental analysis and assessment
- Environmental economics and policy
- Global environmental change and policy
- Pollution management
- Water management
Specialisms are further developed in the final five months of the course, during which an in-depth individual research project is conducted. Projects vary widely in their nature, including desk, field and laboratory.
We are looking to recruit highly motivated candidates with the potential to develop a broad appreciation of all aspects of the management of people, technology, science and policy in relation to environmental issues.
Prospective candidates should possess a good honours degree (second class minimum), or comparable international qualification.
If your first degree is from a country other than the UK, you may find the guidelines within our Country Index helpful. Please note that these guidelines indicate the College minimum.
University training in environment-related subjects is not a pre-requisite for our course. We welcome applications from candidates with first degrees not only in science and engineering but also in the social sciences and, indeed, any academic subject in which there is a link to the way that we understand, value or manage an aspect of our diverse environment. Over half of students on this course have completed work experience since their first degree.
Recruitment to the course requires applicants to specify at least two specialist options in order of preference in their personal statement in their application. Entry to the course is assessed separately for each specialist option.
