The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

Our unique MFA Theatre Directing will interest you if you already are, or wish to become, a professional theatre director. You study individual modules, lasting approximately four to six weeks each, and we run some modules overseas, recently in Moscow, Thailand and Bali. We ensure there is a strong international focus with teaching by a wide range of directors and professional practitioners.

Our MFA Theatre Directing for 20 months. If you are an MFA student, then you take a second year in which you undertake further modules and direct a short production or write a dissertation. Graduates can direct professionally, function as artistic directors or teach in universities.

A Masters course is an academically rigorous programme during which you explore your subject in depth, reaching a high level of specialist knowledge. You draw on knowledge and skills from your undergraduate study or your professional life to produce work of a high academic standard, informed by current thinking and debate.
A Masters course lasts for twelve months (full-time). (If you are from the EU, then our Masters courses are regarded as second-cycle qualifications under the Bologna Declaration and consist of 90 ECTS credits).
Please note that module information on our course finder provides a guide to course content and may be subject to review on an annual basis.
