Applied Linguistics is a field which explores how language functions in the world, first and second language acquisition and intercultural communication.

This online degree will appeal to students without a background in Linguistics, wanting a professionally relevant higher qualification, or postgraduate qualifications in TESOL. In particular it will appeal to students who want to add to their coursework degree a further substantial research project that will make them competitive for PhD entry.

This degree is Australia's first fully online coursework Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, and is chosen by students all around the world. The MAAL with Honours is a 72 credit point degree, consisting of 48 credit points of coursework plus a 24 credit point dissertation. The standard program, consisting of 4 core units and 4 elective units chosen from a selection, plus the dissertation, leads to a Master of Applied Linguistics with Honours. The TESOL Major consists of the same 4 core units, 2 TESOL units, and 2 elective units chosen from a selection, and leads to the award of a Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) with Honours. The TESOL major includes a practicum which meets or exceeds the minimum number of hours required of teachers in the ELICOS and adult migrant sectors.

Students who complete the MAAL with Honours or MAAL (TESOL) with Honours will then be well-placed to continue to a further higher research degree, such as a PhD, in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, TESOL or allied fields

Career Opportunities
The Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) with Honours constitutes "a recognised postgraduate TESOL qualification which includes a practicum" (NEAS: National ELT Accreditation Scheme). Completion of the M.App.Ling. (TESOL) with Honours will meet the standards required by most employers in the adult TESOL sector, including those in the ELICOS and adult migrant sectors. Prospective students are advised to consult the NEAS website to ensure their other credentials meet the requirements.

Course Aims
The aim of the course is to provide relevant learning in the field of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Students who complete the course will acquire advanced skills, especially research skills, in this field and be equipped to use them in a diverse range of professional, academic and community contexts, but especially in language teaching.

Advanced Standing
Candidates admitted under Rule (b) shall be awarded advanced standing for a maximum of 48 credit points.
Advanced standing will not be granted for LING600.

Period of Candidature
For candidates admitted under Rule (a) the period of candidature shall be:
(a) 1.5 years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to five years as a part-time candidate.

For candidates admitted under Rule (b) the period of candidature shall be:
(a) six months as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to two year as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements
To qualify for the award candidates admitted under Rule (a) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points at 500-level and units to the value of 24 credit points at 600-level. Candidates must attain at least Distinction average in 48 credit points before commencing LING600.

To qualify for the award candidates admitted under Rule (b) must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 600 level.

An applicant for admission to the degree shall hold:(a) a bachelor degree, in any field, from a recognised university; or(b) the Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) or Master of Applied Linguistics from the University of New England or equivalent qualification from a recognised university and attained at least Distinction average in 48 credit points;(c) they must also have reliable access to the internet;(d) International students must meet the University's English language requirements.
