Applied Measurement Science is a 120 ECTS international Masters programme at University of Tartu. The degree is issued as follows: Master of Science in Engineering. The programme provides thorough knowledge and skills in the areas of laboratory and technological measurements, testing and chemical analysis methods, quality systems, metrology and related economic and legal aspects. Studies are carried out in the brand-new Chemicum building, one of the top research and education facilities in Northern Europe.
The programme consists of obligatory courses (45 ECTS credits), practical placement (internship) (9 ECTS), masters thesis (30 ECTS), elective courses (30 credit points), and optional courses (6 ECTS). It is also possible to take only part of the curriculum whereby granting the degree will be decided on case-by-case basis (taking into account previous studies, work experience, etc)
Measurements must be considered in the broadest sense and have many applications:
toxic metals in drinking water;
cholesterol level in blood;
strength of construction materials;
protein content in wheat;
octane number of gasoline
and many more
Importance of measurements is enormous for economy, society, medical sciences and much more:
40% of the EU directives involve measurements
Critical economical, social, medical decisions are based on results of measurements
Estimated direct annual spending on measurements alone is 80 billion EUR or 1% of the GDP in Europe
Wrong measurements can have major consequences: direct (loss of profit, death of patient, failure of equipment, etc.) and indirect (incorrect environment protection measures, inefficient business plans, etc).
Who should apply to the programme:
Graduates with Bachelor s degrees in physics, chemistry, materials science, natural sciences, engineering, technology or medicine
Practitioners in analysis and measurement laboratories who are facing the fast development of analytical methods and new regulations (Quality systems, ISO 17025 accreditation, etc.)
Personnel of laboratories, accreditation, certification and inspection agencies
Quality managers in various industries
How will this degree develop your potential:
Thorough knowledge and skills in laboratory and technological measurements, methods of testing and analysis, quality systems
High competence demanded for work in quality assurance laboratories in various industries, inspection, certification and accreditation agencies
Practical experience gained during the study period through an internship placement with companies
Why choose the University of Tartu for your Masters:
University of Tartu Testing Centre accredited according to ISO 17025
Leading European Research Centre of Metrology in Chemistry
UT Participates in the work of EURAMET-MetChem, EMRP, TrainMiC, CITAC and other International Metrology organisations and initiatives
Learning outcomes:
1. Graduate has systematic knowledge of the physical, chemical and metrological basis of the more widespread measurement and analysis methods, factors affecting the results, methods of calculating of measurement results and assessment of their quality and documenting measurement results. The graduate has systematic knowledge of quality systems.
2. The graduate has skills necessary to work with the more widespread measurement and analysis methods, to tune them according to a given measurement or analysis procedure and to optimise measurement procedures. The graduate is qualified to determine the characteristics of measurement and analysis procedures and to assess their suitability for a specific measurement or analysis task. The graduate is capable to assess the adequacy of the measurement or analysis results obtained.

Accreditation
The University of Tartu (register code 74001073) is public university and operates pursuant to the Universities Act (passed with the law from January 12, 1995 (State Gazette I 1995, 12, 119) that entered into force February 18, 1995), University of Tartu Act (passed with law from February 16, 1995 (State Gazette I 1995, 23, 333) that entered into force March 21, 1995), Statues of the University of Tartu and other legislative acts.
According to the subsection 22 (7) of the Universities Act, the basis for conducting studies at universities lies in study programmes that are confirmed by the councils of the respective universities and correspond to the Standard of Higher Education in Estonia. The study programmes are entered into the Estonian Education Information System, which was founded on the basis of subsection 366 (4) of Republic of Estonia Education Act. State recognition of diplomas is based until 31.12.2011 on a positive accreditation decision of a study programme. Starting from 2009, educational institutions may provide higher education programmes, award academic degrees and issue diplomas, if, as a result of the assessment of the respective study programme group, the Government of the Replublic has granted them such a right (in Estonian higher education system this right replaces education license). In years 2009-2011 both regulations are valid for issuing state recognised diplomas. All higher education programmes in the University of Tartu belong to the assessed study programme groups and our dilomas are nationally recognised. Before 2017 universities have no obligation for institutional accreditation.
