The Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft offers a dynamic Masters programme very much informed by the unique circumstances of the Netherlands, where the high population density has strongly influenced thinking about how to work creatively with space. Creating an inspiring and sustainable living environment
The field of architecture used to be fairly straightforward it was about the design of buildings. But these days, the field is far more complicated. Where in the past the emphasis was primarily on expanding the supply, far more attention is now directed to maintaining, adapting and replacing existing buildings and neighbourhoods. Construction as a field has therefore become more complex and specialised. That in turn increases the demand for architectural engineers with management skills engineers who are capable of skilfully directing both the technical and logistical components of a construction project at every phase along the way from design to management of the completed structure.

What you will learn
The Master's Programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences meets the above demands. In the educational programme, it addresses a range of issues of vital interest to society, such as:

MSc track in Architecture

Architects play an important role in determining the design of the built environment. It is primarily their designs that shape our cityscapes, be they residential neighbourhoods, houses, offices, shopping centres, museums, town halls, airports, stadia, or theatres. And design is the principal concern of the MSc Track in Architecture. You will learn how to conceive of and to sketch out building projects from a scientific perspective. In so doing, you will have to strike the right balance between structure, form and function. Youll come up against both technical and social challenges.

Track in Urbanism
The main role of the urban planner and designer is to integrate interests coming from social-cultural, economic and political perspectives with the natural conditions of the site, with the purpose to shape and manage the process of urban development. This process is subject to both local and endogenous trends. The former include problems of congestion and mobility, urban renewal and densification, competition for limited space, and other issues of the contemporary urban development. Urban planners/designers need to respond to these local trends taking into account exogenous trends like economic globalization, the consequences of the financial crisis, climate change, demographic trends and the energy transition.

The relevance of urbanism as an integrating discipline is growing. The Urbanism Track at Delft University of Technology addresses interventions by means of urban design, landscape architecture and spatial planning that must occur at all levels of this process of urbanization. For instance, at metropolitan level, planners may need to prepare strategic master plans for the urban environment that may fundamentally alter the relationship between the city and the countryside. At local level, neighborhood redevelopment projects may require the redesign of buildings and public spaces.

MSc track in Real Estate and Housing (RE&H)

Managing the built environment is a major challenge to be tackled in the 21st century. Addressing this challenge requires detailed knowledge of real estate supply and demand, and an understanding of how to coordinate building processes and building projects. In the Real Estate & Housing Track, students gain a broad array of skills required to shape and manage our future environments: real estate management, design and construction management, and housing management. Attention will also be paid to your personal management skills.

MSc track in Building Technology

Designing and building an innovative and sustainable living environment for tomorrows world may well be one of humanitys greatest challenges. Society must create a physical environment to meet current needs, yet simultaneously create a sustainable legacy for future generations. This demands architectural and engineering skills across a broad spectrum. The Building Technology track and the strongly related Architectural Engineering specialisation prepare the architect and building engineer for this challenge. The Architectural Engineering specialisation presents students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills required to qualify as an architect while pursuing a course of study with a more technological focus.

MSc track in Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture is an independent design discipline related to Urbanism and Architecture. The landscape architect is a designer of outdoor space: from architectonic ensembles and urban spaces through to large-scale urban, rural and infrastructural landscapes. The landscape design process is a synthesis of art and technology in which consideration is given to the formal, material and cultural qualities of the site. Each project is a unique balance of geometry and geomorphology, artefact and nature, form and function. And because landscapes evolve and land use changes over time, designing with consideration for time and landscape processes is an important part of the discipline.

The Faculty of Architecture sets additional requirements:A portfolio of work is required for admission to the MSc programme in Architecture, Urbanism & Building Sciences. The portfolio should include samples of work from your previous programme, including your final or most recent project. Working experience may be added to the portfolio, but it must be clear that it is professional work, with an indication of the status.Quality is more important than quantity. A portfolio should reflect the scope and variety of the previous training and experience with specific emphasis on your knowledge of and skills in the track for which you are applying. You should submit work that represents your personal interests and abilities.Copies of finished drawings and sketches of original design concepts should be part of your portfolio. Sketches should show preliminary visual and (verbal) development of ideas and problem solving. They should also show how you develop and organise your projects and ideas and how you research and explore a design project. A paragraph explaining the design concept and solution should be included with each project.You must clearly indicate for each project you include in your portfolio: * The exact role that you played in the project e.g.: - as part of your education: was it a class or group assignment or something you pursued on your own. - as professional work: did you have a leading or a following part in the project. What exactly was your contribution to the project. * Name of the supervisor, teacher or professor involved in the project. * When did you carry out the project (date and/or academic year) * What inspired the project? * What were your goals?Neatness of presentation is extremely important as it reflects your attitude to your work. Your portfolio should be presented in a compact form. Maximum size: A4 or A3 (folded to A4!). It should be flat, not rolled. Bulky objects such as models cannot be examined, but you may enclose photographs. Your portfolio should be bound and contain a table of contents.General Admission Requirements: * A good BSc degree (or equivalent) of a high quality and level. The main subject focused on during the BSc phase should match the MSc degree course you intend to pursue at TU Delft. * excellent study results obtained during their BSc programme (GPA of at least 75% of scale maximum). * an excellent knowledge of the English language. (Candidates from abroad must present a TOEFL or IELTS test results). In addition, candidates are required to prepare a personal statement (in English) of his/her motivation to participate in the MSc programme.
