The MLitt will appeal to students who wish to study art and architecture from the medieval to modern period, gaining experience in the trade-craft of research. Through the study of Art in Scotland, students will gain first hand experience of the masterpieces available in this country. It provides training in the methodology of art historical research and focuses on current theories and debates in art history.

It provides a choice of approach to period, and each student's curriculum is tailored to meet the individual's own needs and interests, through the programme's strong inter-disciplinary focus. It provides suitable training to progress to a research degree.

Assessment
Assessment is based on essays and reviews, combined with presentations and class contributions. The degree is concluded with a 15,000 word dissertation.

Teaching
Teaching takes place in small groups, in class. Most courses involve a hands-on aspect, with site visits and fieldtrips.

Careers
This programme can be the preliminary to independent research at MPhil and PhD level, or it can launch graduates into art historical careers. past students have gone on to work in the heritage industry, galleries, publishing, teaching, libraries, museums.

Art in Scotland is designed around the rich primary sources available to students at Aberdeen, combined with the expertise of members of staff who are active researchers in the field. The great collections and monuments of Scotland form the key items of each specialized course, so students will graduate with first-hand knowledge of their subject.

The first half-session provides training in the methodology of art historical research, focusing on current theories and debates in art history. The second half-session delves into the primary sources: Scottish, Italian, North European.

A major feature of this degree is its inter-disciplinary focus, with a significant number of options being taught in co-operation with History, Film Studies, Visual Culture, Language and Literature. During the year, students are accompanied on visits to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Paris. Students taking their dissertation commence with personal guidance on their dissertation topic, before writing up on their own during the summer.

The standard entrance requirements are normally a good second class Honours degree, or at a level deemed equivalent by the Head of School.International applicants must also meet the English Language Requirements of the University.Good English is required not only for the student's own academic success but also because it is necessary to be able to contribute at seminars and perhaps conferences, as well as reading texts and writing essays or papers. Applicants should furnish the University with transcripts of their previous academic study and also with the names of two academic referees, or ask their referees to send in their recommendations directly to the University without waiting for a formal notice from the University.
