The main goal of the Master Degree in Astronomy is the training of postgraduate students coming from Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or other associated fields, towards a research career in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences. Namely, by making them more capable of proceeding to a third cycle degree (doctoral program), or working in technology and instrumentation development, in those areas.

The researchers at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA), are strongly involved in teaching and supervision of research projects in the context of the Master Degree in Astronomy. The IA hosts more than two-thirds of all active researchers working in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences in Portugal, and is responsible for an even greater fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in these areas.

The University of Porto has an agreement with the Université Paul Sabatier - Toulouse III, France, whereby students who opt for attending just one year of the Master Degree in Astronomy at the University of Porto and another year of the Master Sciences, technologie, santé - mention Physique et Astrophysique, receive a Joint Double Masters Degree awarded by both Universities.
