The 20th century was the century of physics, experts have now declared the 21st century to be the century of biology. As biology is a very general term, this of course is a fairly general statement. However, a number of the so-called life sciences have produced success stories and leaps in progress since the start of the millennium. So there might be some truth in the prophecy.
Biotechnology is one of these life sciences and is regarded as one of the key industries of the century. Biotechnologists are trying to solve problems from various fields, such as food and energy supply, medicine, environmental technology and chemistry. With a degree in biotechnology, your future job description could include identifying new materials and organisms, designing new production processes, improving the efficient use of materials and energy, reducing environmental impacts and, quite simply, creating new products and services.
In this Master's degree programme, science is not our only focus, however. We think that engineering and science go hand in hand, as one can provide answers to the other's requirements, for example, when a laboratory-scale development is to be turned into a marketable product or service.

Educational organisation
The Master's degree programme is designed to take three semesters.First semester (30 ECTS):
In the course of the first semester, you will acquire more in-depth knowledge on topics that were part of your undergraduate programme. This will include biotechnology and process engineering. In the biotechnology modules, we will focus on cell biology and cell culture technology. In process engineering, we will discuss mathematical modelling of thermal and chemical equilibrium processes, including energy, momentum and mass transfer, according to the latest developments and standards of modelling and process simulation in research and science. Finally, you will learn modern, advanced laboratory analytical and separation methods. The curriculum is completed by elective courses dealing with current and relevant problems from technical and non-technical fields.
Second semester (30 ECTS):
During the second semester, you will solve a complex problem as part of a team. A professor will supervise and support your team and will provide you with the necessary scientific background. Our laboratories will provide you with the resources you need to employ state-of-the-art experimental and numerical methods. Working on the project will help you to further develop your team and project management skills.
Third semester (30 ECTS):
The third semester will be dedicated to your Master's thesis. You will be allowed to choose between writing your Master's thesis in collaboration with a partner from industry or participating in an ongoing research project at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences.

The labour market in the EU is in great need of highly skilled engineers and scientists for positions in research and development and at managerial level. Having graduated with a Master of Science degree from this programme, you will have acquired cutting-edge knowledge on biotechnology and process engineering, both in theory and in practice. Your skills will make you an interesting candidate for jobs in small and medium-sized companies, as you will be qualified in science and engineering.The development of your career is then up to you: specialist or executive - the choice is yours. Your MSc in Biotechnology and Process Engineering and your English language skills will give you the opportunity to work anywhere in the world.
Language requirements
If English is not your native language or the course of study you graduated from most recently was not taught mainly in English, we ask you to provide a Cambridge First Certificate, a TOEFL test or an IELTS. You can be admitted to the Master's degree programme- if you have successfully graduated from a Bachelor's or Diploma degree programme in biotechnology and chemical/process engineering with a final grade of at least 2.5 or
- if you have relevant work experience of at least two years or
- if you can provide two letters of recommendation from professors of your former university
If you graduated from a similar study programme, you may be admitted to the Master's degree programme depending on the decision of the programme admission board. The board may require you to participate in additional classes apart from the regular curriculum.
If you graduated from a similar study programme comprising 180 credits (ECTS) only, you will have to acquire an additional 30 credits. There are two ways to gain these additional credit points: you may take classes either at Hochschule Flensburg after you arrive here or at your former university before coming to Flensburg. In either case, you will have to fulfil the requirements defined by the admission board, so please contact the board to discuss your choice of classes.
Enrolment fees
The semester fee at FUAS is 100 EUR; this includes a bus ticket valid on all buses in Flensburg as well as contributions to the Studentenwerk and the General Students Committee. The enrolment fee is 25 EUR.Costs of living
The cost of living for a student in Germany is approx. 670 EUR per month including accommodation. This is only a rough estimate; actual living costs depend on your personal lifestyle, of course.Job opportunities
Some student assistant jobs may be available within the faculty. Students should not rely on this option, however, as the demand for student assistants varies.Student jobs may be available in Flensburg, but you should keep in mind that these jobs may require German language skills. International students may also have to adhere to regulations as specified in their visa.
Arrival support
The International Office offers a programme for international students during the first week of the semester, before classes start. Students will be introduced to Hochschule Flensburg and the various services provided. A welcome dinner for our international students is part of the week, as are a guided tour through Flensburg and other activities to get to know your home away from home and fellow students.International student tutors in the halls of residence also support new students in settling in.
