Despite its relative youth, the Department has established itself as the primary supplier of B.S. chemical engineers in Southern California and as a research force to be reckoned with. Departmental offices are located in Boelter Hall, adjacent to Mathematical Sciences, and across the Science Quadrangle from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

The requirements for the M.S. degree are a thesis, nine courses (36 units), and a minimum 3.0 grade-point average in the graduate courses. Chemical Engineering 200, 210, and 220 are required. Two other courses must be taken from regular offerings of the department, and two additional courses may be Chemical Engineering 598, involving work on the thesis. The remaining two of the nine courses may be taken from those offered by the department, or from any other field in life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering. At least 24 units must be in letter-graded 200-level courses.

Fellowships and teaching assistantships are awarded only once a year, usually in early March for studies beginning the following September. Students who wish to maximize their chances of receiving aid should submit all of the required documentation before January 15. Other forms of support, such as Research Assistantships, are provided directly by faculty members who have externally-funded contracts or grants. While our school or grants support many students on such research funds, commitments are usually made after a student has demonstrated his or her ability in at least two quarters of study at UCLA.
