Description

Civil and Environmental Engineers work on the location, design, construction, and the operation and maintenance of highways, airports, buildings, bridges, dams, water supply treatment plants, waste water collections systems and treatment plants, irrigation and drainage systems, river and harbor improvements and many other infrastructure facilities necessary for our modern life.

In preparing our students for the professional environment after graduation, we offer a broad based Civil Engineering degree that requires design coursework in five areas: structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, water resources and hydraulics. Students also will choose four technical elective courses from at least two of these areas to attain a depth of understanding in that area of engineering practice. Before taking these courses, students will take courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering sciences/mechanics.

The program’s mission and educational objectives are accomplished by providing undergraduate students with an educational program that will result in the following outcomes by the time of graduation:

  • an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  • an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  • an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • an ability to communicate effectively
  • the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  • a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues
  • an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
