Classics is the investigation of the life and cultural expressions of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Today, Rutgers finds itself in the forefront of some of the most vital areas of inquiry: constructions of ethnicity, sexuality, and freedom; performance of music, drama, and poetry; democracy, tyranny, and resistance to inequality; the social dimensions of law; academic and popular philosophy; and the culture of athletics.

In addition, we have developed an ambitious digital teaching initiative that leverages our unusually rich archive of archaeological images (some dating back to the late 1920s) and world-class collection of Republican Roman coins.

The greek word euporia means wealth or abundance, often visualized as a harvest cornucopia. In addition to taking courses with our core faculty and those in affiliated departments, a consortium allows our graduate students to take courses at Princeton, Columbia, and other universities in the New York metropolitan area.

Contents

The Ph.D. candidate is expected to have a knowledge of all major authors; to include work beyond both the Greek fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E. and the Republican and Augustan periods of Rome; to have an acquaintance with the inter-dependence of Greek and Roman literature and culture; to demonstrate an understanding of past and current scholarly trends; and to undertake research in a specific aspect of classics or its related fields.

The Ph.D. candidate is expected to complete at least 48 credits of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree and to demonstrate a reading knowledge of German and either French or Italian. In the final semester of coursework, candidates for the Ph.D. must take preliminary comprehensive examinations comprising Greek and Latin translation and general knowledge questions on Classical texts, based on the Ph.D. reading list, as well as questions on a special field and a special author. Upon successful completion of the exams, in the subsequent semester, students must submit a thesis proposal for approval by the department faculty.
