This program enables students with a relevant first level to obtain a professional qualification in prosthetics and orthotics. Prosthetist-orthotists are liable for the provision of prostheses (artificial limbs) to individuals who have amputations, and orthoses (supportive devices) to individuals who have musculoskeletal disabilities. Their responsibilities include customer analysis, design, fabrication, fitting and alignment of prostheses and orthoses, and monitoring and review of apparatus used by clients. Students will develop theoretical knowledge of physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and prosthetic and orthotic prescription, design and manufacturing, enhanced by strong practical skills in research methodology, clinical assessment, and also the application of prosthetic and orthotic practices.
Graduates of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics Could be eligible to apply for membership with Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association, Inc. and the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics. Professional membership might be subject to additional or ongoing conditions beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body to get details.
