This program enables students with a relevant first level to obtain a professional qualification in prosthetics and orthotics. Prosthetist-orthotists are liable for the provision of prostheses (artificial limbs) to individuals who have amputations, and orthoses (supportive devices) to individuals who have musculoskeletal disabilities. Their responsibilities include customer analysis, design, fabrication, fitting and alignment of prostheses and orthoses, and monitoring and review of apparatus used by clients. Students will develop theoretical knowledge of physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and prosthetic and orthotic prescription, design and manufacturing, enhanced by strong practical skills in research methodology, clinical assessment, and also the application of prosthetic and orthotic practices.

Graduates of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics Could be eligible to apply for membership with Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association, Inc. and the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics. Professional membership might be subject to additional or ongoing conditions beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body to get details.

Bachelor level, normally completed over the previous seven decades. Highly recommended requirements are tertiary-level subjects in physiology and anatomy, including regional musculoskeletal system. Desirable requirements are tertiary-level subjects in biomechanics, clinical analysis, psychology, pathology, materials technology, evidence-based practice, research techniques or statistics, and human movement. Students without a background in prosthetics and orthotics fabrication skills will likely be asked to complete the bridging course in P&O Fabrication skills and occupational health and safety. The fee for the course is $900 (2013 commission, subject to change). NB: Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that an offer of a place. Entrance into all of La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
