In the English-language Master's degree programme "Computer Science and Media", students are introduced to advanced topics and the latest research findings in the field of interactive digital media. Two main areas form the basis of the research-oriented and accredited programme:
(a) study of current topics in the field of computer science and media (media security, data mining, information retrieval, machine learning, big data analytics (first professorship in Europe!), optimisation, mathematical modelling, human-computer interaction, mobile media, usability, virtual reality, computer graphics, computer vision, visual analytics, and visualisation)
(b) acquisition of key skills through a project-based study approach in small groups with the goal of enhancing students' academic communication, presentation, and writing abilities

Students work in the laboratories of the scientifically-oriented chairs, which provide an excellent overall infrastructure. They are regularly involved in current research and development projects during their studies and even in international publication activities. Teaching and research assistantships, as well as other jobs, are readily available at the university and with local companies.
Well-trained computer science experts are in high demand both here in Germany and on the international job market. As this programme combines advanced computer science with application-oriented project work, there is a particularly strong demand for our graduates in the telecommunications, game and entertainment industries, and in service-oriented software departments in industrial and commercial enterprises and multimedia corporations. We have learned from our alumni that MSc graduates frequently find employment in R&D departments at large research institutes (e.g. Fraunhofer), as well as at universities and tertiary educational institutions, where they often plan to pursue a doctorate.

Educational organisation

The Master's programme comprises lectures, tutorials, seminars and two comprehensive student research projects, as well as a Master's thesis for which students can choose from various specialised fields. During the first and the third semesters, students undertake research projects (15 ECTS each) in small groups of three to six. These can be selected from a wide variety of topics offered by the various professors. A large elective module (24 ECTS) spanning the second and third semesters allows students to specialise further in advanced topics of computer science, mathematics or Master's courses from other fields. The third semester is also an ideal semester for students to spend abroad, since it offers greater flexibility with respect to the choice of classes. The fourth and final semester is reserved for undertaking the Master's thesis project.
The standard duration of studies for the Computer Science and Media Master's programme is four semesters, leading to the award of a Master of Science degree. All Master's courses are offered in English. Basic English is spoken nearly everywhere, as the historic city of Weimar attracts many visitors from all over the world. However, it is useful to acquire some knowledge of the German language to simplify your daily life. Teaching and research assistantships, as well as a variety of other jobs, are readily available at the university and with local companies. Student services and the student council support students in finding jobs.

Course objectives

The Master's programme in Computer Science and Media is designed to provide graduates with advanced analytical, creative and research skills for the development of software and application systems for digital media. Problem-based active learning and interdisciplinary course work are central and important aspects of our curriculum. This significantly advances the soft skills of our graduates, particularly in teamwork, communication and presentation skills.
