UND College of Education & Human Developments Master of Arts in Counseling with an Emphasis in School Counselingprepares you to promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of K-12 students. Completion of coursework leads to eligibility for state department of education licensure in North Dakota as a school counselor and may be compatible with licensure requirements in other states.

Through online courses, practical experiences, and two mandatory 4-day on-campus visits each summer, you will be prepared to assist students in:

* elementary schools
* middle schools
* high schools

You will receive a broad, theoretical foundation in counseling plus hands-on experiences that will provide you with the skills and training needed to become a professional school counselor. A commitment to social justice and appreciation of diversity is also integrated throughout the curriculum.

As a graduate of the School Counseling distance degree program, you will be able to:
* work in K-12 settings as a professional school counselor, assisting students and parents with educational planning and the social and emotional development of the student.
* help students evaluate their abilities, talents, and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals.
* use interviews, counseling sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods to evaluate and advise students in educational and personal development.
* develop, implement, and evaluate high quality, comprehensive school counseling programs.
* assist students who have academic and social development problems or other special needs.
* teach students the life skills they need to deal with problems.

Already Have Your Master's Degree? Online School Counselor Licensure Option
If you already hold a graduate-level degree in counseling or a related field, you may complete online Post-Master's Coursework for K-12 School Counseling Licensure. Upon completion of an individualized program of study, you will be eligible school counseling licensure in the state of North Dakota. The coursework may also be compatible for school counseling licensure in other states; please verify with your state's department of education.

* A baccalaureate degree or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution. * Completion of at least 20 semester credits of coursework in the behavioral sciences at the undergraduate level, including: Statistics, Educational Psychology, Instructional Methods, and Classroom Management.* * An overall grade point average (based on 4.00 scale) of at least 2.75 in an undergraduate degree program or at least 3.00 for the last 2 years of undergraduate work. * Completion of the Supplemental Application Form, which is part of the School of Graduate Studies application. * Submission of a personal statement outlining your goals and objectives for seeking the graduate degree in school counseling, including your academic or professional accomplishments as well your career goals. * Submission of 3 letters of recommendation from those who can comment on your academic abilities. * Interview for finalists being considered for admission. This interview may be conducted in a group format at UND or via phone for long-distance applicants. * Professional Resume (strongly recommended, but not required).*If you have not taken all 4 of these courses, you may be admitted on a provisional basis until the requirement is completed. Courses in psychology and sociology may be applied toward this prerequisite. Coursework in other social science disciplines where the course focus is on the description or explanation of individual or group behavior may be accepted in fulfillment of this prerequisite at the discretion of the Counseling Department. Financial Aid
Semester-based, online courses are eligible for most federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs.

Semester-based, online courses are NOT eligible for any tuition waiver programs at the University of North Dakota (i.e. Cultural Diversity, International, Employee, Graduate), except as required by statute.

In order to be eligible for federal financial aid, you must be:

* fully admitted in a degree or approved graduate certificate program.
* registered for at least 6 credits in each term you apply the aid towards.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the only application UND requires to determine eligibility for all federal and state financial aid. Refer to the UND Student Financial Aid Office for more information.

Employer-Provided Tuition Assistance

Military & Veterans Tuition Assistance
UND is approved to offer college credit courses through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) program.

Scholarship
If you are completing a UND degree program through online courses, you may apply for the Ben & Ruth Gustafson Continuing Education Endowment at UND provided by UND Online & Distance Education for non-traditional, distance students.
