The Master DKE delivers in-depth knowledge and competences in Data Science, one of the most promising career areas for ambitious computer scientists. Its subject area is "Engineering" for Data and for Knowledge, aiming to turn passive data into exploitable knowledge:

It focusses on the representation, management and understanding of data and knowledge assets. It encompasses technologies for the design and development of advanced databases, knowledge bases and expert systems, methods for the extraction of models and patterns from conventional data, texts and multimedia, modelling instruments for the representation and updating of extracted knowledge. The Master DKE can be studied in German or English, and is thus open to students who have mastered either of the two languages.

DKE spans application areas ranging from business intelligence and market watches to life sciences, biotechnology, and security. It builds upon advances in networked services, people and agent communication, in decision support, information systems, and management. The management and analysis of data is essential; the maintenance and understanding of knowledge assets are of major importance in business venues, in governmental authorities, and in non-profit organisations.

Educational organisation

The M-DKE is organised across five thematic areas. Students must acquire credit points (ECTS) in each area as follows:
1) Thematic area "Fundamentals" - 30 ECTS: elective modules on basics of data mining, database processing, data/image/multimedia engineering
2) Thematic area "Models" - at least 12 and at most 24 ECTS: elective modules on knowledge representation, knowledge modelling and knowledge processing
3) Thematic area "Methods I" - at least 12 and at most 24 ECTS: elective modules on knowledge discovery, data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence
4) Thematic area "Methods II" - at least 12 and at most 24 ECTS: elective modules on information processing and retrieval
5) Thematic area "Applications" - at least 12 and at most 24 ECTS: elective modules on applications of Data & Knowledge Engineering, including business applications, medical applications, engineering applications and core computer science applications (like security or image understanding)

Each student must participate in at least one team project (6 ECTS) related to a topic on Models, Methods, Applications or a combination of the above.
After three semesters of study, the students must write a Master's thesis (fourth semester).

Course objectives

In the Master DKE, we prepare our students for a career as:
  • Knowledge engineers in large institutions like banks, medical centres, joint ventures and holdings as well as in small and medium-sized enterprises
  • Project managers for interdisciplinary projects that demand data-intensive solutions
  • IT consultants, specialised in the design and development of knowledge-intensive scenarios; application areas include e-business, biotechnology, and customer relationship management
  • Researchers on information systems, intelligent systems, and their many application areas

The Master DKE also provides the foundations for further studies towards a PhD degree.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their German or English skills:
  • DSH-2
  • TestDaF 4/4/4/4
  • TOEFL (paper-based 527, computer-based 197, or Internet-based 71)
  • IELTS (minimum score 6.0)
  • CAE (Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English) minimum "B"
  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) minimum "C"

Academic requirements

According to our statutes, a successful applicant must:
(1) have graduated with a degree in Computer Science or in a similar discipline containing at least 10 CS courses (up to four courses on applied statistics can also be counted to the 10),
(2) have a good grade/mark in that degree and
(3) have mastered either the English or the German language.

Criterion (3) requires a language certificate.

Enrolment fees

Currently 94.50 EUR per semester
The semester fee covers services offered by the "Studentenwerk" (Student Union) and the student representatives. Enrolled students receive a semester ticket for free use of public transport, student discounts in the campus cafeteria, etc.

Costs of living

A minimum of 700 EUR per month must be budgeted for accommodation, costs of living, health insurance, books, and miscellaneous expenses.

Job opportunities

Within the framework of project work carried out with our partners, students frequently have the opportunity to take up part-time jobs.

Funding opportunities within the university

Scholarships cannot be provided for new students. The university provides a limited number of excellence scholarships. Eligible candidates are students in advanced semesters who clearly show above-average results.

Arrival support

Before arrival, a welcome package with relevant information will be sent to prospective students. There is a pick-up service if desired. Please inform the student group IKUS (http://www.ikus.ovgu.de) of your arrival in advance. IKUS will meet you at the station in Magdeburg.
Furthermore, there is a "Welcome & Orientation Week" at the beginning of the semester.

Services and support for international students

The International Office and the programme coordinators assist students in any way possible. To integrate new students into the university and into the student community, both the university and the faculty offer a "Welcome & Orientation Week" right before studies start in October. The university offers German language courses and lots of social and cultural events organised by the IKUS or by other student initiatives at the faculty or on campus.

Accommodation

The "Studentenwerk" (Student Union) Magdeburg manages the on-campus halls of residence (mostly one- to four-room apartments). Currently, the monthly rent ranges from 220-350 EUR per room (approx. 12-35 square meters), depending on size and furnishing. Rooms in the halls of residence are limited in number. The accommodation request can be found here: http://www.studentenwerk-magdeburg.de/en/accommodation/accommodation-request/.
The Student Union assists all new students in finding adequate accommodation, either on or off campus. Private accommodation is available on the Magdeburg accommodation market. However, fully furnished units are in relatively short supply.
