Can we safeguard the future quality of drinking water in the Netherlands? What effect will rising sea levels and river floods have on Dutch society? Each group takes its own approach to such major issues. Business economists, for example, think in terms of earning money; the ministry responsible is concerned with safety and security; while an environmental organization focuses on promoting a sustainable approach to water, spatial planning and the environment. In Earth and Economics, you will learn to examine issues from various perspectives so that you can use knowledge of earth science and spatial economics to estimate the necessity for intervention in our natural environment, as well as the risks of intervention. Within the Earth and Economics programme, you will not only study economics and policy but also subjects from the fields of geology, physical geography, hydrology and ecology. The first year of the programme will focus on basic mathematics, physics and chemistry, as you will need these to understand the natural processes of earth science.
