Economics

The Master's programme in Economics has a strong international emphasis. You will study both the effective framework and the tools needed to analyse a variety of economic issues.

The Master's programme in Economics offers a wide range of specialisations ranging from the theoretical to the applied: * Behavioural Economics and Game Theory * Industrial Organisation, Regulation and Competition Policy * Development Economics * International Economics and Globalisation * Monetary Policy and Banking * Public Economic Policy The Amsterdam School of Economics provides students with the broad range of skills, in-depth knowledge and international expertise that they will need in the business world and public sector alike. Many of the lecturers in the Master's of Economics are researchers and part of the 10 interdisciplinary research programmes dealing with economics, econometrics, operations research and actuarial science, including History & Methodology of Economics, Experimental & Political Economics and Industrial Economics, Competition & Antitrust.

Students can choose one of the following tracks:

Programme structure

The Master of Science in Economics is a one-year programme of 60 ECTS credits (1 ECTS credit = 0,5 US credit). The course schedule is listed below. The academic year runs from September to the beginning of July and is divided into two semesters, each with three blocks. Please refer to the academic calendar for the exact dates.

First semester In the first block students will get a solid economical basis by attending the core courses Microeconomics & Game Theory, Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics. During this first block students will choose their specialisation or track and in the second part of the first semester they will enroll in the first three track specific courses.

Second semester In the first block of the second semester students specialise further by attending two track specific courses. At the same time students will prepare themselves for their thesis which they will complete in the last part of the second semester.

Thesis

The Master's thesis is the final requirement to be completed prior to graduation. It will be supervised by one of the economic researchers from the relevant field.

Degree

Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive a Master's degree in Economics and the title Master of Science (MSc).

Internship

Master's students can also choose to do an internship in order to conduct research for their final thesis. This offers the opportunity to conduct research in a company or organisation on an academic level. Interested students should contact the Internship Office.

Grade list: A certified grade list(s) is considered in the evaluation. Previous education: Applicants are expected to hold a Bachelor‘s or Master‘s degree in Economics, or to have taken economics as a major subject. Students are expected to have taken a course in econometrics or extended quantitative methods at the undergraduate or graduate level. Please note that a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences and a Fachhochschule (Germany) will not be taken into consideration.
