This course provides a unique opportunity to explore the nature of education, care and learning within an early childhood context from a national and international perspective.

It is aimed at those ultimately wishing to pursue a career in teaching, early years, or one of the many roles related to education, or those interested in educational issues who are looking to study a socially relevant academic subject. Education is central to Government policy making and its study is no longer confined to teacher training courses.

This degree offers an intellectually rigorous and challenging engagement with contemporary educational issues. There is also the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in an educational and or early years context.

Course Content

Education is a multidisciplinary subect, combining aspects of history, sociology, cultural studies, philosophy and psychology. Our degree in Education and Early Childhood Studies will provide you with the oportunity to explore key, contemporary issues and will include a combination of:

  • The history, nature, purpose and politics of education
  • Education and Early Years policy and practice in the UK and abroad
  • Race, gender, equality and children's rights in education
  • Learning, knowledge and the curriculum in the early years

In addition to developing a comprehensive knowledge of educational theory and practice relevant to the early yeras, the course will also equip you with the ability to:

  • Reflect on your own experiences
  • Carry out independent research
  • Communicate effectively using a variety of information and communication technologies

Units you will study

  • Year 1

    In Year 1 all students will take the following 4 core units, each worth 30 credits:

    • Understanding Education
    • Learning and Teaching
    • Children's Learning and Development
    • Children Families and Diversity

    On successful completion of Level 4, the interim exit award of CertHE Education and Early Childhood Studies is made.

  • Year 2

    In Year 2 students will take 90 credits of Core Units and 30 credits of Option Units.

    Please note the units Children's Learning and Development, Citizenship and Participation and Business and Enterprise belong to the Early Years Programme.

Additional Requirements

Students who wish to go on to a Primary PGCE or GTP programme of study once they graduate should be cognisant of the needs of those programmes and should possess GCSE at grade C or above in English language, Mathematics and Science (please refer to entry requirements before applying).

Funding

Student Support Package

At Manchester Metropolitan University, we offer a Student Support Package worth £4,000 for UK students from households with an income of up to £25,000. This non-repayable package can be taken for accommodation fees, if you are staying in an MMU Halls of Residence or we have arranged your contract with Victoria Hall or it can be loaded onto your metcard to spend on food and other services on campus (see below). We also offer an Academic Achievement Bursary for students who do particularly well in their exams and while they study at MMU.

For some healthcare professional courses such as Adult Nursing and Social Work, you may be eligible for an NHS bursary. You apply for this bursary separately, and will be invited to make your application by the NHS once you are holding an offer of a place on a relevant course. We do all we can to ensure you have the support you need while you study with us. If you do run into financial difficulty, you may be entitled to some additional support through the Access to Learning Fund. The fund is a limited amount of money that the university will either grant or loan to a student depending on their needs and situation. In order to qualify, you will have to meet a number of criteria, provide evidence and complete an application.
