Education Studies

Description

Education Studies combines aspects of history, sociology, cultural studies, philosophy and psychology. It will provide you with the opportunity to explore key, contemporary issues in education through a consideration of: the history, nature, purpose and politics of education; education policy and practice in the UK and abroad; race, gender and equality in education; and learning, knowledge andthe curriculum. 'Education' is a central tenet of government policy and, as such, a socially relevant, evolving and exciting area of academic study in its own right. There are opportunities to study overseas in the second year of this course.

Please note that this course does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status, however it provides a foundation for postgraduate courses in teacher education and other related fields.

Placement options

There are no formal placements but you are provided with opportunities to work with children and young people in a variety of contexts, such as schools, out of school initiatives and museums, and are actively encouraged to work as a volunteer.

A degree in Education Studies provides you with a wide choice of career opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

Many graduates continue their education, studying for the professional qualifications that will enable them to become primary school teachers, early years professionals, youth or social workers.

Others pursue careers in counselling, coaching or training, learning support, educational administration or management or work in the voluntary sector.

Graduates may wish to progress to one of the postgraduate courses offered by the Institute of Education.

These include PGCE Primary Education, Masters in Education Studies, Masters in Childhood Studies and Early Years Practice.

Course Content

The course will also equip you with the ability to reflect on your own experiences, carry out independent research, and communicate effectively using a variety of information and communication technologies.

As part of the course we also offer you the opportunity to work in a school or an alternative educational organisation (for example, a museum or out of school initiative).

During Year 2 of your degree there are opportunities for a period of study abroad at a university in Europe, America, Japan or Australia or Japan.

Units you will study

• Year 1

  In Year 1 (Level 4) students will take 90 credits of core units ie 3 x 30 credit units. The Core Units are:

  The First Year Seminar: Understanding Education

  Teaching and Learning 1: Supporting Learning

  Primary Education Studies 1

  In addition, students will take 30 credits of option units. They can either take a 30 credit option unit in Education Studies or a 15 credit unit in Education Studies (Children Schools and Families: Uni-wide language option), together with a 15 credit option unit from the unit-wide languages programme). In such an instance, students will take the 15 credit unit in Education Studies in Semester 1 and the 15 credit Uni-wide language unit in Semester 2.

• Year 2

  Study in Year 2 will typically include: Policy, Practice and the Professional; Teaching and Learning; Working with Children and Young People and an Introduction to Educational Research through Collaborative Inquiry.

• Year 3

  Study in Year 3 will typically include: Global Issues in Education; Working in a Learning Context and Independent Inquiry - a research project in a topic of your choice.

  There are also a number of specialist option units which focus on social justice issues, the forgotten minorities in education and aspects of educational leadership.

Assessment details

The assessment will be coursework based. There are no formal examinations. Various assessment methods are used, including essays, group and individual presentations, reports, projects, portfolios, and patchwork texts.

Additional Requirements

All candidates must have evidence of study at level 3 or equivalent within the 3 years prior to application and must provide an academic reference.

A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure is required for all students. This will be completed through the University prior to enrolment.

Students who wish to go on to a Primary PGCE or GTP programme of study once they graduate should be cognisant of the needs of those programmes and should possess GCSE at grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science (please refer to entry requirements before applying).

Funding

Student Support Package

At Manchester Metropolitan University, we offer a Student Support Package worth £4,000 for UK students from households with an income of up to £25,000. This non-repayable package can be taken for accommodation fees, if you are staying in an MMU Halls of Residence or we have arranged your contract with Victoria Hall or it can be loaded onto your metcard to spend on food and other services on campus (see below). We also offer an Academic Achievement Bursary for students who do particularly well in their exams and while they study at MMU.

For some healthcare professional courses such as Adult Nursing and Social Work, you may be eligible for an NHS bursary. You apply for this bursary separately, and will be invited to make your application by the NHS once you are holding an offer of a place on a relevant course. We do all we can to ensure you have the support you need while you study with us. If you do run into financial difficulty, you may be entitled to some additional support through the Access to Learning Fund. The fund is a limited amount of money that the university will either grant or loan to a student depending on their needs and situation.
