Engineering technologists focus on practical design and applied technology, working across a wide range of engineering disciplines. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology prepares you for these varied careers and gives you the opportunity to choose your major. It’s accredited by the  Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) and prepares you for Technical Membership of IPENZ (TIPENZ). Through your studies you learn to make engineering judgements, solve problems creatively and ethically and design for sustainability. You learn to communicate technical and non-technical information, and develop strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. Our close links with companies like Fisher & Paykel, Beca, Opus, Spark and Contact Energy can help you gain valuable industry experience as part of your studies.

Majors

  • Computer and Mobile Systems Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering

Each year you study core (compulsory) papers and select last one semester and are worth 15 points. You must complete 120 points each year (360 in total).

In addition to successfully completing all the papers, you also need to complete a minimum of 600 hours of planned supervised work placement to graduate. This work experience exposes you to real engineering practices and management systems and helps you build engineering networks.

Year 1
Builds the foundation of knowledge and skills required for your chosen major.

Core papers (for all majors):

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Introduction to Engineering Design

All students except Mechanical Engineering students must also take the following papers:

  • Introduction to Computing
  • Electrical Engineering Principles
  • Personal Computer Engineering and Applications
  • Three other papers that relate to their chosen major

Mechanical engineering students do the first two core papers above, and then six core mechanical engineering major papers:

  •  Computer Applications for Engineers
  •  Electrical Theory
  •  Engineering Materials I
  •  Engineering Mechanics – Statics I
  •  Engineering Mechanics – Dynamics I
  •  Introduction to Thermofluids and Energy

Year 2
You begin to specialise in your chosen major.

Year 3
You will undertake further study to advance your knowledge in your major.

All Year 3 students undertake the industry-based Specialisation Project. This is your chance to apply what you have learnt in a research or industrial environment.
