English is the study of the literature and language of the English-speaking world: Britain, Canada, the United States, Ireland and countries associated in the past or present with the British Commonwealth. Students majoring in English take courses in individual authors, national literatures, language or writing, literary genres and literary theory. Courses are offered in subjects as diverse as Shakespeare's comedies and romances, women's literature, linguistics, 20th century Canadian literature, science fiction and creative writing.A degree in English gives students skills in critical and analytical thinking, develops the imagination and educates them to write clearly and logically. Study in English prepares students for a variety of careers. Graduates often proceed to further degrees in law, business administration, library science or education. English majors also develop careers in creative and professional writing, publishing, journalism, teaching English as a second language and university and college teaching.
