Learning Goal 1 for Students: Attain distinct ability, scholarship, research and leadership skills in areas related to the study of insects

Assessment of student achievement of Goal 1: * Grades in graduate courses
* Qualifying examinations assessing depth and breadth of knowledge
* Review by faculty of student progress with close advising and mentoring
* Placement in positions and careers that require ability and scholarship in those aspects of the biological science that address entomological questions and issues.

Learning Goal 2 for Students: Engage in and conduct original research

Assessment of graduate student achievement of Goal 2: * Preparation of and defense of Ph.D. dissertation proposal
* Assessment of quality of Ph.D. dissertation:
* Public defense of dissertation
* Critical reading of dissertation by committee of graduate faculty members and a committee member from outside of the entomology graduate program.
* Submission and acceptance of peer-reviewed articles and conference papers based on the dissertation
* Achievement of students as evidenced by professional placements, selection for conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications and individual grant attainment

Learning Goal 3 for Students: Prepare to be professionals in careers that require training at the highest levels in biological sciences that address questions and issues related to entomology

Assessment of graduate student achievement of Goal 3: * Review evidence of papers presented, publications and professional networking
* Evaluations of teaching effectiveness of graduate student instructors
* Collection of placement data
* Review by external advisory committees, both inside of and external to the University

Requirements

Admission to the Program may be attained by either of two routes:

* Admission from another institution, or via transfer from another graduate program in the Rutgers Graduate School, by recommendation of the Program's Graduate Student Acceptance and Progress Committee, as approved by the Department Chairperson, the Director of the Graduate Program, and the Dean of the Graduate School.
* Recommendation by the student's Master of Science Advisory Committee for those already enrolled in the Entomology Graduate Program.

Entrance Requirements: * Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in verbal, quantitative, analytical and advanced areas must be on file with the Graduate Program Director prior to acceptance into the program. International applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL examination.
* Personal statement, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants must secure an adviser and funding prior to being admitted to the program.

Funding

There are several ways of obtaining funding, either through Rutgers or the Department of Entomology. This page provides links to information about funding. The Entomology Department has several funds that include the support of graduate students.

Teaching and Graduate Assistantships are available through the Entomology and Biology Department on a competitive basis. They cover tuition-remission and include a stipend but do not cover fees.
