The ENR programme is a two-year programme, consisting of 120 ECTS, divided between core classes, electives and a research thesis (30 or 60 ECTS). Most courses amount to 6 ECTS, indicating that each student takes approximately 5 courses each semester. The core curriculum consists of a maximum of seven courses. Those courses are expected to provide students with the necessary breadth and depth needed to truly be experts in environment and natural resource issues. Furthermore, the core classes are designed to give a solid foundation in interdisciplinary thinking. Usually the core courses will total 2435 ECTS for most students, in accordance with their academic background. The remainder is fulfilled by electives from various faculties at the University. As a result students have considerable freedom of choice in organising their studies and can choose a field of specialisation according to their interests.

The ENR programme is truly interdisciplinary. That includes the focus of the programme and it's structure within the University of Iceland. It's not an individual department, but is organised jointly by all of the University of Iceland Schools; School of Education, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences. Students graduate from the faculty where the main supervisor for their master's thesis is based with an M.A. or an M.S. in Environment and Natural Resources.

Students are expected to complete courses from different disciplines, fostering a broad understanding of environmental and resource issues, and to complete a research project. The research project offers an opportunity to explore a chosen subject in greater depth and acquire research experience.

In order to be eligible for the Environment and Natural Resources Masters Programme, a student must have completed a B.A./B.S. degree at the University of Iceland, or a comparable degree from another University - first class. First class refers to grade point average of at least 7.25 on a scale from 1-10. This is regardless of the subject of previous degrees. The ENR Programme Board can require a student to submit information as to the nature and substance of his/her studies if the fulfilment of this requirement is in question.
