Erasmus Mundus is also a scholarship programme, which offers scholarships to best applicants from around the world to study in Europe. Numerous universities in many European countries participate to this cooperation programme; in total there are currently approximately 125 Erasmus Mundus programmes in Europe. Erasmus Mundus is also a quality label for the joint programmes.

What is Sport and Exercise Psychology?

Sport and Exercise Psychology is the scientific study of people and their behaviour in sport and exercise contexts, and the practical application of that knowledge. The field, as well as the EMSEP programme, builds on the scientific bases of sport and exercise sciences, public health, and psychology. As the title implies, EMSEP has two main focuses: (1) promotion of healthy habits and overall lifestyle via regular engagement in various forms of physical activity; and (2) psychological support for athletes. The areas covered by EMSEP include, but are not limited to, motivation, performance, behaviour regulation, cognition, (post)career planning for athletes, identity, counselling and preventive interventions within sport and exercise contexts.

Aim of the Programme

The programme aims at educating highly qualified researchers and professionals for the growing field of SEP; for example, in the areas of motivation, performance, behaviour regulation, counselling, and preventive interventions within sport and exercise. The programme is a timely response to increased demands for experts in the field to address major challenges related to ill-health, sedentary life style, and the world of sports today.

Career opportunities

There is an increasing demand for experts in the field of sport and exercise psychology. The EMSEP programme prepares the students for a research and/or professional career in sport and exercise psychology through a combination of coursework, independent study, internship and an extensive hands-on research experience. After successful completion of the programme, the graduates will be awarded a double degree. The EMSEP graduates can expect to find employment in private and public sectors in the fields of exercise, well-being and sport; for example as health and fitness leaders, instructors, performance enhancement specialists, psychological health consultants, or academic researchers in the field.

Home Universities

Students can choose their preferred home university from the following three EMSEP partners: University of Jyväskylä (JyU), University of Thessaly (UTH), and Lund University (LU). The selected 24 students will be distributed equally between these home universities.

The students spend the first, third and fourth semesters at the appointed home university. For the second semester, all of the students go to the host university, University of Leipzig. This enables the students to meet each other and to meet the experts in the network as well as visiting scholars from other universities.

Programme Structure

Semester 1

The students spend the first semester in their home universities. The EMSEP programme will be launched with a common introductory session, with similar content throughout the consortium. Studies will be provided according to the local curricula.

Semester 2

For the second semester all students come together to study at the University of Leipzig. This ensures the provision of common core elements to all the EMSEP students. It also enables students to cohere and network as a group. In addition, the students meet the experts of the consortium and benefit from the teaching of invited scholars. The Intensive programme, European dimensions in SEP will be organised during the spring term of the first year, including classes in Sport and Exercise Psychology, Masters thesis seminars and practicum workshops. Teaching will be provided by the consortium teachers and visiting scholars from 3rd countries.

During the first and second semesters, the students will learn the core substance areas, theories and methods of SEP, and begin the planning for the Masters thesis. Modules 1 and 2 ensure that all the students, regardless of the major subject of their Bachelor's degree, get the same core knowledge of the SEP discipline.

Semester 3

During the third semester students will complete the practicum period and courses according to curriculum at the home university. For some students, the third semester may include a second mobility period. This mobility is obligatory for, and only offered to, those who have obtained their last degree in the country of the selected home university. Course and thesis work during the mobility period will be fully recognised by the EMSEP home university. The location of the second mobility period will be decided by the consortium, with consideration for the student's preferences.

Semester 4

The final semester will be spent at the EMSEP home university to complete the Master's thesis. Collaboration between students and teachers of the consortium continues throughout the programme with the help of a virtual learning environment.
