Family and Community Social Services

Make a difference in society in a very meaningful way. Our program explores current social issues, and the development and delivery of programs designed to assist individuals, families and communities. You will be exposed to different areas of social service work and learn how to understand the challenges faced by vulnerable populations so you can learn how to deliver impactful services, including counselling, mediation and crisis intervention. Upon graduation, you will earn an Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Family and Community Social Services and a Social Service Worker Diploma.Courses in your first year focus on understanding human behaviour and issues related to individuals, families and groups in the field of social work. Courses include Issues in Social Work in Canada, Couple and Family Dynamics, and Interpersonal Communication Skills. In your second year, you will engage in theoretical and practical studies in counselling, ethical and professional issues, and working with various vulnerable populations. In your upper years, you will work with diverse groups and learn theory and techniques in family therapy, case management and social work practice. You will graduate with important skills and approaches you need for the workplace or further studies in social workпПСhow to listen, how to support someone, understanding boundaries, professionalism, cultural awareness, compassion and self-care. Starting in your second year, you will earn more than 850 hours of workplace experience at three different placements.
