The mechanics of fluids and solids plays a vital role in the competitive engineering of advanced products, processes and systems. The principles and balance equations derived from fluid and solid mechanics yield a description of the behavior of these materials within the products, processes and systems concerned. Subsequently, this can provide the basis for analysis, optimization and, as a result, design. Fluid and Solid Mechanics form a fundamental core of engineering sciences such as Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics and Physics. The advent of modern computers has created totally new challenges and perspectives for this discipline. Fluid and Solid Mechanics is formally a track of the Mechanical Engineering Master's degree program. The department has a close working relationship with many high-tech companies in the region. This track links up seamlessly to the PhD programs of the nationwide research schools JM Burgerscentrum (fluid mechanics) and Engineering Mechanics (solid mechanics). The very broad spectrum of applications means that graduates of this special Master's track will be able to find careers in a wide variety of institutes and industries.
