CentraleSupélec is a French public institution of Scientific, Cultural and Professional Teaching (EPSCP) registered as a higher education institution (Grand Établissement) under the joint supervision of the French Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research, and the French Ministry of Economics, Industry and Digital Development.

On January 1st, 2015, CentraleSupélec officially opened, permanently uniting École Centrale Paris and Supélec, two French Engineering Grandes Écoles which, since 2009, have steadily developed their collaboration and joint developments in their fields of activity: initial and ongoing training and research.

The schools have been partners since the joint competitive entrance exam was opened in 1969, and have naturally developed alliances, sharing the same core values of excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, international openness and leadership.

In becoming CentraleSupélec, they complete one another in their respective fields of research to cover all areas of Engineering and Systems Sciences.

Today, over and above its campuses in the Paris region and in Metz and Rennes, CentraleSupélec boasts:

4,500 students and 370 instructors and instructor-researchers interacting within an international network;
three international schools (China, India and Morocco) and five partner international laboratories (in China (2), Singapore, Canada, USA);
partnerships with 176 international universities and 140 companies.

In the 19th century, it was imperative for French industry to follow the industrial era and promote the development of practical applications of recent major scientific discoveries. Civil engineers with a solid education in the fields of industry and sciences were needed. Consequently, École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures (1829) and the École Supérieure d’Électricité (1894) were created at the instigation of renowned French scientists.

Collaboration between École Centrale Paris and Supélec, initially limited to the joint competitive entrance exam, has steadily expanded over the years to cover many fields of teaching and research and led to the creation of CentraleSupélec on January 1, 2015.

The 2017QS World University Rankings by Subject places Centralesupelec 79th in the world for Engineering & Technonoly. A significant leap ahead (153rd in 2016). It is placed in the 2nd position (French institutions/universities) behind Ecole Polytechnique. Locally (France) , CentraleSupélec ranks 3rd for Computer Science & Information Systems and top for Engineering Civil & structural, Engineering Electrical & Electronic, Engineering Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing subjects.
