German and Philosophy enables you to learn the German language and about the cultures of the German-speaking world, while engaging with the world’s major philosophies.

German is one of Europe's most important languages for business and culture. Worldwide, it is the second-most widely used language on the internet (W3Techs 2014). Fluency in the German language, combined with knowledge of political and cultural developments in the German-speaking world, opens up career opportunities in many areas of Europe.

As a student of Philosophy at Kent, you do not so much learn about philosophy as learn to do it yourself. This includes not only studying major philosophies and philosophers, but also contributing your own ideas to an ongoing dialogue. You develop the ability to connect the most abstract ideas to the most concrete things in our experience.

In combination with German, you will be in an ideal position to tackle some of the world’s leading German-speaking philosophers, such as Heidegger, Goethe, Wittgenstein and Kant.

Between Stages 2 and 3, you spend a year studying or working abroad in Germany or Austria, which will greatly improve your understanding of German. On your return you could choose to complete a dissertation on a subject of relevance to both areas of your degree, such as a German philosopher.

This degree programme therefore is ideal for those wanting to gain a broad and detailed understanding of our world, developing a deeper understanding of German culture and art from the perspective of both an artist and a German speaker.

• The University of Kent will not necessarily make conditional offers to all access candidates but will continue to assess them on an individual basis. If an offer is made candidates will be required to obtain/pass the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma and may also be required to obtain a proportion of the total level 3 credits and/or credits in particular subjects at merit grade or above.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

  "The Academic Excellence Scholarship can provide up to a 50 % reduction in tuition per semester. These scholarships will be renewed if the student maintains superior academic performance during each semester of their 3-year Bachelor programme.
