Subjects are prepared in order to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge to do real problem solving on a project. Offered subjects are in the fields of Engineering Mathematics, Fundamentals for Applied Science and Engineering, and Fundamentals for Creative Skills and Management. The Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering is part of the School of Environment and Society.

During the fourth year of their undergraduate study, GSEP students will affiliate themselves with their chosen research laboratory according to their research interest.  They can freely choose among the diverse field of specializations of the TSE faculty. They will work on their thesis project in the laboratory of their chosen adviser from the TSE department wherein they will have their own personal desk, a space, and an environment which enables them to truly concentrate on their own research. They will be also able to interact and engage in research activities with other members of the laboratory, many of whom are also international students like them.

After completing the required number of units in the undergraduate course and successfully completing the thesis project, the GSEP student will earn a degree of Bachelor of Engineering from the university.

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy the stated conditions specified under (A) or (B):

(A) To apply as a student supported by the MEXT scholarship:

1. Applicants must be residing outside of Japan.
2. Applicants must be nationals of a country with which Japan has diplomatic relations. A person who has Japanese nationality at the time of completing an application for the MEXT scholarship is not eligible. However, persons who hold dual nationality (Japanese and that of another country) and whose place of residence at the time of application is outside of Japan are eligible to apply as long as they renounce their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan.
3. Applicants must be born between April 2, 1995 and April 1, 2000.
4. Applicants must have completed 12 years of regular schooling or have graduated with a high school equivalency (acceptable by Japanese standards) by March 2017.
5. Applicants should arrive in Japan between April 3 to April 7, 2017 as designated by MEXT.
6. Applicants must acquire a College Student (ryugaku) visa before entering Japan. Please also note that individuals who change their visa status after arrival in Japan to a category other than College Student will no longer be qualified to be a MEXT Scholarship recipient from the date the visa category changes.
7. Persons falling under any of the following conditions are ineligible for the MEXT scholarship (if any of the conditions are discovered after the start of the MEXT scholarship period, the student will be required to withdraw from the scholarship):

• (a)Those who are military personnel or military civilian employees at the time of their arrival in Japan
• (b)Those who cannot arrive in Japan during the period designated by MEXT
• (c)Those who are/were recipients of a Japanese government scholarship
• (d)Those who are currently enrolled at a Japanese university with a College Student (ryugaku) residence status, or those enrolled or scheduled to be enrolled at a Japanese university as privately financed international students from the start of the scholarship application period to the start of the provision of the scholarship. This does not apply to currently self-financed international students at Japanese universities who will complete their studies and return to their countries before the end of March 2017.
• (e)Those who are currently applying to programs offered by other universities supported by the MEXT scholarship, or recipients of financial support for international students from the Japanese government (MEXT) or JASSO (including those who are expected to continue as recipients of that support after the semester in which they began receiving the funds).
• (f)Those who were expected to graduate but could not satisfy the required academic conditions and qualifications.
• (g)Holders of dual nationality at the time of application who cannot prove renunciation of their Japanese nationality by the time of arrival in Japan.

(B) To apply as a privately-funded international student:

1. Applicants can be residents of Japan or countries abroad.
2. Applicants must not hold Japanese nationality, and are required to obtain a visa that will not interfere with enrollment at Tokyo Tech under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. Holders of dual nationality at the time of application must renounce their Japanese nationality by the time of their enrollment.
3. Applicants should be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017. (Note: If applicants have completed 12 years of regular schooling or have graduated with a high school equivalency (acceptable by Japanese standards) by March 31, 2017, they are eligible even if they are under 18 years old.)
4. Applicants must have completed or be expecting to complete a 12-year regular education outside of Japan by March 2017 (excluding Japanese programs located outside of Japan that have been recognized by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "the Minister") as an equivalent to a Japanese high school program), or are designated by the Minister (see Note 1), or are designated by the Minister as well as by Tokyo Tech (see Note 2).
5. Applicants should arrive in Japan in March.
6. Applicants must possess a College Student (ryugaku) visa or intend to acquire the said visa by the time of their enrollment.
7. Applicants who fall under the following conditions may have their admission/acceptance to the program nullified. (a) Applicants who were expected to graduate but could not satisfy the required academic conditions and qualifications. (b) Holders of dual nationality at the time of application who are not able to prove the renunciation of their Japanese nationality by the time of their enrollment.
8. Those who have passed the examination for the GSEP program cannot apply for additional entrance examinations at Tokyo Tech. Exceptions can be made if a letter of withdrawal submitted by the applicant to the GSEP program is approved by Tokyo Tech.

(Note 1)"Persons who are designated by the Minister" refers to the persons that are specified under bulletin number 153 issued by the Ministry of Education in 1981. They should fulfill one of the following conditions:

1. Those that have passed a qualification examination outside of Japan which determines that they have a regular 12-year education equivalency In addition, they should be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017.
2. Those who have completed an upper secondary educational program outside of Japan, and have completed one of the following preparatory programs: a)a training course listed in the top and middle sections of Table 1, b) a preparatory program which covers required subjects in order to enroll in a Japanese university provided by an institution listed in the bottom section of Table 1. In addition, they should be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017.
3. Those who have completed an educational program in Japan from an institution that is regarded as an upper secondary school in a country with primary and secondary education period of 12 years. Institutions which fulfill this condition are listed in Table 2(original list in Japanese ). Additionally, they should be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017.
4. Those who have completed an educational program in Japan from an institution that is regarded as an upper secondary school in a country with primary and secondary education period of shorter than 12 years. Institutions which fulfill this condition are listed in Table 3(original list in Japanese ). Additionally, they should be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017.

(Note 2)"Persons designated by the Minister as well as by Tokyo Tech" refers to persons specified under items 20 to 24 under bulletin number 47 issued by the Ministry of Education in 1948. They should fulfill one of the following conditions:
(Note: they must be at least 18 years old by March 31, 2017.)

1. Those who have acquired a diploma granted by the International Baccalaureate, a foundation established under the Swiss Civil Code.
2. Those who have acquired an Abitur certification, a designation in the Federal Republic of Germany and other countries which functions both as a school graduation certificate and a college entrance exam.
3. Those who have acquired an International Baccalaureate Diploma, a qualification for university entrance recognized by the French Republic as well as universities worldwide.
4. Those who acquired a General Certification of Education (A Level), a qualification for university entrance recognized by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and other countries.
5. Those who have completed a regular 12-year education at an institution approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (based in the state of California in the United States of America), the Association of Christian Schools International (based in the state of Colorado in the United States of America), or the Council of International Schools (based in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Please refer to the following organizations whether each school have been accredited.

• ACSI(Association of Christian Schools International)
• CIS(Council of International Schools)

(Note 3)

Persons who have graduated from a Japanese high school or secondary school (including those who are expected to graduate), as well as persons who have acquired permanent residence in Japan are ineligible to apply.

Scholarships

 MEXT Scholarship

The top ten applicants who have applied under Eligibility (A) will be awarded the MEXT scholarship for four years.

• Students who have been accepted for a MEXT Scholarship will not be required to pay the application, admission, or tuition fees.
• The MEXT scholarship provides a monthly stipend of JPY 120,000 for undergraduate students. The amount of the stipend is subject to change in accordance with the directives of the MEXT scholarship program.
• In accordance with MEXT regulations, students will be provided with an economy class air ticket from the international airport closest to their place of residence in their country of nationality to Narita or Haneda International Airport.

NOTE:The applicant will be required to withdraw from the MEXT scholarship if he/she is applying for other MEXT scholarships or a scholarship offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

Applicants who have applied under Eligibility (A) who will enroll in Tokyo Tech under a scholarship other than those offered by MEXT, and applicants who have applied under Eligibility (B) who do not reside in Japan may apply for a Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students awarded by JASSO.
Please note that individuals who have been granted the above scholarship cannot apply to receive other scholarships at the same time.

The monthly stipend is JPY 48,000, which is subject to change in accordance with JASSO's directives. This scholarship will be offered from April 2017 to March 2018. But still, applicants will be required to pay the application, admission, and tuition fees even when they are accepted to this scholarship.
