The MBS (Government) is a post-graduate degree, which may be taken either one year full-time or two years part-time from the date of first registration.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with an understanding of the nature, challenges and dilemmas of contemporary government and governance at national, local, regional and global levels, addressing both conceptual issues and policy debates.

The programme is also designed to enable students to develop high-level research and analytical skills in the areas of government, political science and public policy.

Our graduates have chosen careers in:
* The Civil Service (working in Government Departments, the European Commission, local authorities, etc.)
* Business & Finance (Pfizer, Citibank, Fexico, Cork Chamber of Commerce etc.)
* Education (Lecturing, teaching)
* Politics (e.g. Parliamentary Researchers in Dail Eireann, Parliamentary researcher in the Australian National Parliament)
* The Media (Sub-editor with the Evening Echo)
* NGOs/International Organisations (UN, charities, lobby groups, etc.)

Students studying for the degree full-time take credits as follows:
* * Changing Dynamics of Governance (10 credits)
* Political Science Research Methods (10 credits)
* Democracy and Rights in a Changing World (10 credits)
* Political Participation and Mobilisation (10 credits)
* The New Security Agenda (10 credits)
* Regulatory Reform (10 credits)
* Research Dissertation (30 credits)



Students studying for the degree part-time take the same modules but as follows:
Year one:
* Changing Dynamics of Governance
* Regulatory Reform
* The New Security Agenda
* Political Participation and Mobilisation.

Year two:
* Research Dissertation
* Democracy and Rights in a changing world
* Political Science Research methods

Normally applicants should have an Honours Bachelors Degree with at least Second Class Honours (or an equivalent academic or professional qualification) in one of the following areas: Social Science, Arts, Commerce, Law or a related discipline or equivalent professional experience as deemed appropriate by the Head of Department of Government and the Faculty of Commerce. Applicants may be required to attend for interview or may be short-listed for interview.
