The master's degree in HighPerformanceComputing, Information Theory and Security offers research training and also the chance to specialise in Information Processing (specialisation in Information and Security) or in Highperformancecomputing (specialisation in Highperformancecomputing). This course should be attractive to engineering graduates interested in research as it is more wide-ranging in content than other, more specific master's.

The master's degree in High-Performance Computing, Information Theory and Security deals with areas of computer architecture, parallel processing, high-performance computers, security in distributed systems, coding, compression and cryptography. These topics are a continuation of those dealt with in the bachelor's degree courses in Computer Engineering, especially Information Technology and Computer Engineering.

The objective of the programme is to provide a common methodological basis for research and for going more deeply into various aspects of present-day computer architecture, parallel processing, and high-performance computing or information processing, computer security and distributed systems. In order to achieve this objective, the programme comprises a group of basic common subjects and other specific ones that deal with parallel architectures and high-performance computing or information processing and security.

Career options

The master's degree aims to train researchers who can then complete their training by joining PhD programmes in one of the departments involved or in other departments or universities.

The knowledge and skills acquired will allow them to continue their research career at universities or other teaching centres, public or private, or alternatively in R+D departments of companies.

The programme also aims to increase the employability of its graduates by qualifying them for tasks in science and technology that require top-level specialist skills, and preparing them to contribute, within their own area of experience, to scientific, technical, social and economic progress with the industries and institutions where they further their careers.

Some career options available to students of this master's degree are: university lecturer (in Spain or abroad), research centres (such as Barcelona Supercomputing Centre - BSC), R+D+I departments in companies (such as Telefonica or Advanced Informatic Applications - AIA), computer securitydepartments (La Caixa), and high-tech spin-offs (such as Convergence in Brazil, Ascamm, BlueKnow, Scytl Secure Electronic Voting, or Kinamik Technologies).
