Description

Taking Hispanic Studies and History and Philosophy of Art in combination enables you to learn the language and cultural presence of the Spanish-speaking world and engage with a detailed interdisciplinary study of the visual arts.

Outside Spain, Spanish is the official language of all countries in South and Central America except Brazil, and is widely spoken in many parts of North America. The programme gives you the opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of Spain and Spanish America while developing your language skills.

You have the opportunity to spend a year abroad in Spain, Uruguay or in Peru and we offer advanced language modules focusing on translation and interpreting – valuable skills when looking for employment. Another peninsula language, be it Catalan or Portuguese, is optional for joint honours students. Our facilities include multimedia laboratories, which offer a variety of interactive language learning programmes and dictionaries, and access to a wide range of TV satellite channels and audio, video and computer-assisted language learning facilities.

Studying the History and Philosophy of Art (HPA) enables you to gain a rich understanding of the visual arts through the complementary perspectives of its history and the philosophical understanding of its nature and importance. A distinctive feature of HPA is the interaction between history and aesthetics in the curriculum, and the wide range of opportunities to study practical modules in everything from photography, through curating exhibitions to writing about art for the media and arts industries. This joint honours programme also allows you to focus your studies, if you wish to do so, by choosing options which most relate to Hispanic art and other aspects of Hispanic cultures.

This degree programme therefore is ideal for those wanting to gain a broad and detailed understanding of our world, developing a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures and art from the perspective of both an artist and a Spanish speaker.
