This is a one year full-time or two year part-time programme central purpose of the MA in the History of the Family is to combine the strengths of two traditions: that of the independent researcher into family history and that of established disciplines in history particularly the well developed sub discipline of the history of the family. The objective is a history that is fully contextualised, culturally significant and academically grounded.
Objectives
* To provide those interested in the history of the family with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the methodologies and concepts of the history of the family. * To contribute to and support each student's personal quest for intellectual and moral autonomy
This programme will equip students with the necessary skills for careers in the heritage, archival or library sectors as well as careers in higher education and teaching in primary and post-primary schools.
Semester 1
Introduction to the history of the family, Sources and techniques in the history of the family, Linking families to communities.
Semester 2
People on the move: studying migration, Research Seminar in the history of the family, Dissertation I, Dissertation II.
Applicants should have a primary degree with at least second-class honours, in a relevant discipline such as history, archaeology, geography, or Irish Studies (Primary degree: level 8 NQAI).Applicants with approved equivalent qualifications who have substantial experience in the History of Family (such as appropriate publications), or relevant professional experience may also be considered for admission.ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTSAs all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
