The curriculum in the Master's programme Industrial Management is designed to prepare students to embark upon management responsibilities in the private sector, the service sector, and public administration. The programme offers individually selected modules of study in various areas of business management, science and engineering, and media sciences. This provides students a flexible training strategy with a wide range of opportunities for meeting the demands of global business and the international interlinking of companies. The Master of Sciences in Industrial Management covers a vast variety of topics and issues in engineering and economics.

Educational organisation

The multinational English-language Master's programme includes four semesters with 120 ECTS credits in total. To attain a double Master's degree, students must earn at least 30 ECTS at the partner university Belarusian State University in Minsk in Belarus.

The first semester (30 ECTS) takes place at the partner university in Minsk, Belarus. It allows for the broadening of the student's knowledge in one of the two basic sets of requirements:
  • Engineering and science (profile I)
  • Management and economics (profile II)

The appropriate profile is allocated to each individual student based on previous education and professional experience.

The degree was developed in a project supported by the German Academic Exchange Servive (DAAD). The project is called JOIN IM. It provides monthly scholarships until 2018 for students of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and the Belarusian State University Minsk. Students will receive a non-recurring travel grant for travel and living costs as well as visa fees. The Office for International Relations of University Mittweida will advise you on all funding opportunities. There is no funding provided for other international students.

The second semester (30 ECTS) takes place at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. It engages students in a knowledge-broadening specialisation in Innovation & Business Expansion and includes four core modules:
  • International Management
  • Risk Management and Venture Capital Enterprise
  • Business Expansion
  • Innovation Management

The third semester (30 ECTS) can take place at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences or at the partner university in Minsk. In this semester, students have the opportunity to engage in a research and development project in cooperation with an enterprise (20 ECTS) where they are able to further broaden their management and innovative skills. In addition, students must complete two additional modules of their choice (10 ECTS).

The fourth semester (30 ECTS) takes place at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. The students take part in a Master's thesis involving research, thesis paper, and a defence. The thesis is expected to contribute to the academic progress of knowledge in the selected area of choice. The thesis must be written and defended in English at both universities.

The programme offers students the opportunity to achieve two Master's degrees in two different cultural and economic zones simultaneously - one at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and the other at Belarusian State University Minsk.

Study abroad unit(s)

All participants (German, Belarusian, and international students) spend the first semester of the programme at Belarusian State University Minsk and the second semester at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. The third and fourth semester can be either spent in Belarus or Germany.

Internships

In the third semester, students have to pass an obligatory research and development project in cooperation with an enterprise (20 ECTS) to broaden their management and innovative skills. This semester can be spent in Germany or in Belarus.

Forms of assessment

Forms of assessment are:
  • oral and written exams to demonstrate profound scientific knowledge and extensive expertise
  • university/research projects which require teamwork, critical thinking, and creative action
  • practical projects whilst cooperating with companies to develop problem-solving skills
  • term papers

Course objectives

The English-language programme Industrial Management provides excellent perspectives for ambitious individuals who are eager to explore the depths of the economic industry and enter the globalised economy.

The objective of this programme is to train young professionals in engineering and business management by providing qualitative theoretical instruction with an extensive hands-on approach on an intercultural scale. It will allow you to efficiently apply engineering and management techniques both in small or medium-sized businesses and in industrial heavyweights whilst working creatively in a multicultural and multilingual team.

The double English-language Master's degree programme Industrial Management with aspects of Innovation & Business Expansion is seeking individuals who are interested in contributing to the economic industry and service markets of the future.

Graduates of the Master of Science of Industrial Management will have attained the skills necessary to undertake technical and management assignments in the private or public sector and administration. The multicultural and interdisciplinary nature of this programme provides graduates the opportunity to engage in various area in the national and global labour market:

Language requirements

The applicant must have a good command of English (minimum B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). To prove the language skills, the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida accepts the following aptitude tests:

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) with at least 79 points, computer-based test (CBT) with at least 213 points, paper-based test (PBT) with at least 550 points
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with at least Band 6.0
First Certificate in English (FCE)
Cambridge English (ESOL)

If you successfully passed previous studies in English, you do not need this proof of your language skills.
Each applicant has to pass an interview in English. This serves as an assessment at the beginning of the stay in Minsk.

Academic requirements

This programme requires an above average Bachelor's degree (180 credits comparable to the European Credit Transfer System, ECTS) completed in economics or engineering. The comparison is done by the application service of University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. This office informs the partners in Belarus about all applicants and forwards the approved applications to Minsk to get approval in Minsk. Applicants need to fill an application form from both universities.

Job opportunities

During your studies in Mittweida, it is possible to work, but it is difficult. Be aware that you will need much time for your studies. There are not many job opportunities.

The International Office gives individual advice and support. It recommends travel connections, advises you with regard to accommodation, and informs you about all necessary administrative tasks during arrival and during your studies.

Services and support for international students

Academic counselling of students by professors during the studies is provided in English. Each professor regularly offers individual office hours for students regarding all study matters. The International Office offers administrative support for international students to clear all formalities in regard to foreigner's registration office, health insurance, and opening a bank account. It provides a campus tour as well as a tour through the town of Mittweida. The International Students' Club, called the Cosmopolitan Club , helps you to find friends and to solve problems during your studies. Each semester, it organises excursions and a wide range of other cultural events for foreign students. You can relax in the evenings, watch films, dance or simply talk to other students in the students' club.
