The Master of Science in Information Systems (IS) is offered by the Department of Computer and Information Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The programme is aimed at senior students with a bachelors degree who want to specialize in information systems. Upon successfull completion the student will receive a master of science degree. The programme focuses on the technical areas of information systems design and engineering, providing a broad overview of basic methods and specialized training in selected cutting edge technologies.

The driving forces of Information Systems The pervasive nature of modern digitized information technology (IT) has created the need to conceive of products, solutions and services in terms that reach far beyond consideration of software and hardware design. Broadly construed, the IS field is concerned with the complete life cycle of IT adoption including software conception, design and adoption; organizational IT culture and change management; knowledge engineering and management; and social and cultural aspects of IT. To this list we may add the relatively recent set of issues created by the proliferation of distributed knowledge and services on the Internet, as well as the development of intelligent adaptive technologies for dealing with them.

The skills required for adequate use of Information Technology in the wider context are in great demand in commercial and academic settings. Our programme responds to this demand by providing training in the principles and practice of Information Systems engineering. We achieve this by presenting students with up to date knowledge on our areas of specialty including model driven development, collaborative technologies, intelligent systems, knowledge engineering and web based services, and health informatics.

Objectives Our goal is to educate our students to become information systems engineers who have the ability to conceive IT solutions in the widest context. As a completed student you will have the knowledge you require to assemble requirements and solutions with a sensitivity to the broad set of consequences your decisions may have. During the course you will gain a working knowledge of theoretical and technical issues in a range of domains, and will learn to make decisions about the applicability of various possible solutions. You will gain experience in solution and implementation through customer driven projects, and will also be given the opportunity to participate in forward looking technologies by undertaking project work with one of the many innovative research projects at the department.

The programme consists of core elements and electives. The core elements provide fundamental knowledge and practical experience. The electives allow students to specialize in chosen areas of interest. Throughout the final year the student work on the master thesis and develop independent problem solving and creative skills.

Specializations The programme has two specializations: Information Systems and Information Systems Engineering.

For both specializations the following applies: Prospective students should have a bachelor degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or similar. Their education should include university level courses in the following topics: * Calculus * Discrete Mathematics and Logic * Statistics * Computers (Hardware) * Operating Systems * Communication Technology / Distributed Systems * Programming and Programming Languages * Algorithms * Human-Computer Interaction / User Interfaces * Software Engineering, including project management, requirements engineering, architectural design, OO design modeling (UML or similar), and testing * Databases and Data Modeling (e.g., ER) * Information Systems Analysis (preferably covering both modeling techniques, e.g. DFD, EPC, and available technology implementations, e.g. ERP, data warehouses) Candidates with weak coverage of the topics might be considered if they have other strengths to compensate for it. For the Information Systems Engineering specialization the requirements are more specific: * Students should have at least 30 ECTS credits in mathematical courses. These would include courses in discrete mathematics, logic, analysis, calculus, algebra, statistics, etc. * Students should have at least 60 ECTS credits in ICT courses. These would include courses in software engineering, programming, data bases, information systems engineering, IT and society, human computer interaction, security, telecommunication, operationg systems, etc. * Students should have at least 120 ECTS credits in total in mathematical and ICT courses. * Students should have a basic knowledge and competence in analysis, design and implementation of ICT systems. It is recommended that students have basic courses in business administration and project management (not a requirement). English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 600 TOEFL iBT® test: 90

NTNU charges no tuition fees, but regulations from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration state that

all international students who are not citizens of EU/EEA/EFTA countries must document that they have enough money to live in Norway. For the 2017 intake this amount is NOK 103 950. Successful applicants who are given an offer of admission will later be asked to transfer this amount to NTNU's deposit account.

NTNU offers no scholarships.
