The Bachelor's programme Innovative Textiles targets students who have completed four semesters of basic studies at a foreign university.
The programme has an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing on diverse science and engineering principles. The programme's core subjects, which include extensive laboratory exercises, are complemented with appropriate electives to provide a broad base of fundamental engineering courses leading up to two specialisation options.
Participation in laboratory work is an integral part of the study programme. Students develop a unique background which allows them to pursue undergraduate research, internship experiences, and design projects. All classes are small, and personal attention from faculty is guaranteed. Lectures and laboratory exercises take place in Hof and on the Münchberg campus, a traditional centre for textiles for over 150 years.

After completing their basic studies, students may choose between two specialisation areas:
Specialisation Area "Textile Chemistry":
Students are provided with industry-relevant knowledge and abilities concerning the finishing of textile fabrics and other products. The range of subjects enables students to carry out the finishing processes for textiles as well as the production of textile composites according to ecological and economic requirements.

Specialisation Area "Innovative Textiles":
This specialisation deals with the application of scientific and engineering principles to the design and control of all aspects of fibre, textile and apparel processes, products and machinery. Students gain knowledge in the areas of production, quality control, and the development and design of textile products. With an emphasis on production technologies, students are familiarised with the selection of processes and machines for economic production and optimisation of textile parameters, particularly with respect to technical textiles.

Students of both specialisation areas participate in extensive practical and laboratory training assignments and complete one mandatory practical semester. Students learn to apply their knowledge and skills to complex or novel tasks and to solve problems independently. The ability to integrate into teams and to become effective members of project groups plays an integral role in developing students' interpersonal competence.

Educational organisation

Semesters one to four (two years): basic studies
The first two semesters can take place at Hof University (if the student is eligible to study in Germany without further preparatory courses and is proficient in the German language, as the first year is taught in German) or at a partner university / the student's home university.

Semesters five to six (one year): core studies at Hof University
Analytic Chemistry, Technical Studies for Knit Structures, Product Design, Teamwork and Time Management, Nonwovens, Weaving, Basic Material Science for Engineers, Presentation and Communication, Quality Management, Knitting, Principles of Textile Finishing, Spinning
Intensive German language training

Semesters seven to eight (one year): specialisation at Hof University
Areas of specialisation: Textile Finishing, Coating and Industrial Fibres, Coating Technology for Thin Layers, Textile Dyeing, Textile Composites, Mechanical Properties and Testing Methods, Conditioning of Polymer Surfaces, Textile Chemistry, Technical Textiles - Knitted Fabrics, Textile Printing, Textile Dyeing, Extrusion Technology, Project Work
Intensive German language training

Semester nine: internship and thesis in Hof or abroad

Bachelor's thesis (12 weeks)

Course objectives

This degree programme prepares students for complex engineering tasks in textile and related industries. The textile engineering graduates of Hof University of Applied Sciences are in high demand in industry for a variety of careers in research, development, production, and management, nationally as well as internationally.

Professional perspective:
  • very good job opportunities in textile engineering and related fields due to the internship and hands-on training offered
  • benefit of a German degree: opportunity to work in Germany and the EU

Language requirements

Applicants for the first two semesters are required to provide a German language proficiency test (TestDaf) as well as an English language proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge ESOL).
As the language of instruction is English from the third semester onwards, applicants for the third semester are not required to provide proof of their German language skills. They have to submit an English language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge ESOL).
