Welcome to the Institute of Energy, an innovative and pioneering research centre with a mission to advance energy technology in the global quest for a sustainable energy economy.

I am immensely proud to be involved in a unique resource in the field of sustainable energy that is rooted in the practical environment of Cardiff Universityâs School of Engineering, and which has been designed to face global energy challenges and play a key role in addressing the increasing demand for sustainable and low carbon technologies.

The Institute of Energy encompasses high quality interdisciplinary research, education and training to address future predicted skills shortages in attracting the next generation of engineers and researchers in the fields of sustainable energy.

We have the large scale facilities necessary to move research towards demonstrating the viability of technology, and we engage and interact extensively with industry and academia to have an impact on increasing UK capacity and capability in sustainable energy technologies.

It is now widely recognised that the transformation and use of energy will become increasingly constrained by the need to reduce CO2 emissions. The Committee on Climate Change now advocates an 80% reduction by 2050 and effective de-carbonisation of the power sector by 2030.

The UK Government has identified the worldwide market for low carbon goods and services to be $3 trillion and that 400,000 new jobs will be created in the UK within this sector over the next 8 years. The Institute of Energy is geared up to respond to this radical transformation of our economy.

The urgency and scale of the task are such that we need to contribute both to the longer term creation of knowledge (the traditional role of the universities), but also to analyse and understand what is necessary to encourage the adoption of low carbon technologies that exist, but have yet to be deployed widely.

Courses can be tailored to suit individual needs, with an option for bespoke courses being delivered to meet specific requirements. All courses have access to our extensive experimental and computational facilities. Short courses can be delivered on-site or off-site away from the university, and current examples include: - Combustion Fundamentals & Explosion Hazards
- Electrical Power Engineering & Renewables
- High Voltage Engineering
- Power Magnetics

Suitable For:
Graduates in electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, physics and other related diciplines.

Funding options

Funding for your postgraduate degree is available from a variety of sources.

Research Council funding

The Research Councils provide government funding for postgraduate study and are a major source of funding for Cardiff postgraduate students. Each Funding Council supports a different area of study and may have differing application and awarding procedures.

We are the lead partner in the Economic and Social Research (ESRC) Wales Doctoral Training Centre, and hold block grants from the following Research Councils:

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

Medical Research Council (MRC)

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

Science Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Charities, trusts and other external bodies

Our 4 year PhD in Integrative Neuroscience is supported by the Wellcome Trust, the UK's largest provider of non governmental funding for scientific research. In addition, there are numerous organisations offering alternative sources of funding for postgraduate courses. These awards are unlikely to cover full expenses but offer help towards overall costs. The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding, a free eBook available to current Cardiff University students, applicants and prospective students, provides guidance and advice on writing funding applications and contains links to over 300 alternative funding bodies. In addition, Cardiff University subscribes to ResearchProfessional providing access to their research funding and news service for current students of Cardiff University.

Part-time employment

Many postgraduates take paid employment while pursuing their studies.

Professional and career development loans

A Professional and Career Development Loan is a deferred repayment bank loan between £300 and £10,000, available for Masters or professional qualifications. Banks usually take between six and 12 weeks to process your application so apply well in advance.

Cardiff University's Learning Provider Number is 8655.

Funding for study and research abroad

A range of organisations provide funding to promote cultural exchange and international mobility in research and teaching. These funding opportunities are generally for doctoral students wishing to conduct part of their studies or research abroad.

Established in 1966, the Cardiff School of Planning and Geography is a leading international centre for teaching and research in spatial planning and human geography. We are a multi-disciplinary applied human geography and urban studies school; the premier school in the UK for spatial planning research and professionally accredited education.
