Description

During the first year we will introduce you to different types of journalism as well as to media studies and academic research skills. The first year is common to most of our journalism courses – it’s a great chance to see what kind of journalism suits you best.

During the second and final years you will study topics in more depth, undertaking modules such as Public Affairs Reporting, Multi-Platform News and Media Ethics. You can also choose an option in a specific genre of journalism and you will research and write a dissertation.

All our teaching staff have worked as senior journalists. Teaching is enhanced by our department’s cutting-edge research, of which a high percentage has been ranked world-leading or internationally excellent by the latest Research Assessment Exercise.

Facilities at our David Puttnam Media Centre are excellent and 95% of our journalism students have been able to access specialised equipment when they needed to, according to the National Student Survey.

Right from the start, you’ll notice Sunderland’s supportive atmosphere. We make sure that it’s easy to receive advice from tutors and there are daily ‘drop in’ sessions staffed by a rota of professional journalists. We also provide practical help in arranging placements and extending your real-world experience.
