This programme is designed to take advantage of the concentration of expertise in late antique and Byzantine history, religion, culture and archaeology in the Cardiff School of History and Archaeology. It is intended to meet the needs both of those who wish to develop their understanding of late antiquity and Byzantium Warfare through a selfcontained year of further study, and of those who wish to deepen and extend their skills in preparation for research at doctoral level.

The course has two parts, consisting of coursework and a dissertation.

Part One (Autumn and Spring):

Students take a core module covering theoretical concepts and approaches in late antique and Byzantine history, and choose from a range of specialist options, including tailored Special Topics focused on particular periods and themes. All students are also trained in research methods and skills, including academic writing, public speaking, the handling of ancient texts, and an ancient language at an appropriate level either Greek (Classical or Byzantine), Latin (Classical, Patristic or Medieval), Arabic, Hebrew, or Syriac and Aramaic.

Part Two (Summer):

Comprises a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words on a topic of the students choice.

Suitable for students who have taken undergraduate degrees in Ancient History, History, Religious Studies or related fields.Students whose first language is not English will be required to pass an IELTS test (minimum 6.5) or equivalent.Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 (General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
