The consecutive Master's Programme Life Science requires a Bachelor's degree in Life Science at the University of Konstanz or a Bachelor's degree in a similar study programme at another university. Applicants need broad basic knowledge in chemistry as well as biology. The Master's programme is an advanced study programme that will systematically introduce you to international research methods and the international research level in the areas of life science, i.e., the molecular-oriented areas of biology and the bioorganic or biomolecular-analytical-oriented areas of chemistry.

The standard period of study for the Master's programme is four semesters. You will attend modules for the first two semesters, followed by several weeks of exam preparation and six to nine months for writing your Master's thesis. During the course of writing your Master's thesis, you will independently work on a larger scientific project. After you have completed the thesis, you will present your findings in a colloquium, open to the department, and defend them in an expert discussion. To successfully complete the Master's programme, you need to acquire 60 ECTS credits in the modules. Additionally, you have to complete an internship of two months (10 ECTS credits). You can work with private or public institutions in Germany or abroad. This internship is a great help for your career planning. You can acquire a total of 120 ECTS credits in the Master's programme. One ECTS credits corresponds to 25-30 working hours. You can individually select your specialisation area with an equal proportion of biological and chemical subjects, or with a focus on the biological or chemical area. You cannot focus only on chemical or only on biological subjects.

The modules in biology consist of advanced level courses, held as six-week all-day compact courses (15 ECTS credits each). In addition to the lectures and seminars, you will carry out an extensive practical research project in a research laboratory and present and defend your findings in a final seminar. In the chemistry modules, you can select advanced courses worth either 6 or 12 ECTS credits. In the 6-credit courses, you will usually study theoretical aspects in lectures, seminars, and exercises. The 12-credit courses also include extensive practical project work in research groups, similar to the advanced level courses in biology.

Internships

An internship of eight weeks is to be completed during the Master's programme.

Forms of assessment

Written and oral exams

Course objectives

The aim of the study programme is to provide a sound, high-quality scientific education that will equip you with particular competence in the field of modern biomolecular research whilst building equally solid specialist foundations in both chemistry and biology. Graduates from this study programme will be able to develop a qualification profile that is relevant to modern pharmaceutical research. Additionally, those who wish to deepen their scientific knowledge and skills will be suitably qualified to embark on doctoral studies in biology or an area of chemistry related to life sciences. The solid foundations created in the undergraduate programme in both chemistry and biology will equip you with the specific ways of thinking in each of these disciplines; in other words, you will be trained to think and work in two scientific languages from the start.

Language requirements

TOEFL test: 90 points or more; or Cambridge First Certificate in English: Grade C or better; or IELTS: band scale 6.0 or better
Applicants with a Bachelor's degree from the following countries do not have to prove their English language skills: USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.

Academic requirements

Entry requirements for the Master's Programme Life Science are:
1. Documentation of a three-year (or more) study programme at a state or officially recognised institution of higher education or Berufsakademie (vocational academy) in the subject Life Science (minimum degree Bachelor of Sciences or equivalent), or a related subject.
2. If the subject of your Bachelor's degree is a subject related to Life Science at the University of Konstanz, you have to have good assessments in the areas relevant for Life Science (organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology).

Applicants with a higher education degree obtained in a country that is not a member of the Bologna Process have to take the GRE test and reach at least a score of 155 (Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning Score).
