This programme will give you specialised training in international science-based policy, relating to marine environment protection and management.
You will acquire a broad knowledge of the multidisciplinary science that underpins environmental policy making and international law. Key skills in evidence-based policy making will be developed through workshops involving specialist case studies, and you will prepare written reports and oral presentations.
Project work will involve a placement in a relevant area of policy making and you will complete a dissertation under the supervision of a member of staff.
The structure shown below is for full-time students. Delivery for part-time students is agreed on an individual basis.
Year 1
Your choice of modules is determined by your current background and future interests. As a guideline, you will take 4 modules in Semester 1, including options. In Semester 2, you will take 3 option modules offered as short, intense courses. At the same time you will work on a literature review to provide a basis for your research project work.
Semester One
One introductory module is selected from SOES6016, SOES6014 and SOES6015, and a further module is selected from the remainder of the options in the list.

* SOES6004 Applied and marine geophysics
* SOES6005 Large scale ocean processes
* SOES6007 Biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system
* SOES6008 Deep sea ecology
* SOES6009 Zooplankton ecology and processes
* SOES6017 Introductory remote sensing of the ocean
Semester Two
Two modules are chosen from the optional module list.
Compulsory:
* SOES6057 UN convention on the law of the seas
* SOES6018 MSc key skills and literature review
* SOES6039 MSc research project
Optional:
* SOES6006 Climate dynamics
* SOES6011 Applied coastal sediment dynamics
* SOES6036 Applied biogeochemistry and pollution
* SOES6024 Seafloor exploration and surveying 2
* SOES6047 Global climate cycles
