Mathematics is an integrated part of our everyday lives. It is found in mobile phones, train schedules, and online search engines—to give just a few examples.

The use of mathematics will become even more prevalent in future. There is an ever-increasing demand for mathematical models and methods in, e.g., industrial applications, information technology, financial institutions, energy, government issues, drug development, DNA mapping, and environmental research.

Study programme focus

The study programme offers courses at a high academic level, providing you with extensive knowledge of applied mathematics and mathematical modelling as well as modern computer equipment and analysis of large data volumes.

Focus areas

The Mathematical Modelling and Computation programme covers a wide range of specializations. To provide a general overview of the study programme, we have chosen to describe a number of focus areas which you can use as a guide to designing your own study plan.

Descriptions and lists of recommended courses are available for each of the 10 focus areas. You are recommended to combine a couple of focus areas—preferably within related fields—to transfer knowledge and draw parallels.

  • Applied mathematical analysis
  • Industrial and applied statistics
  • Scientific computing
  • Stochastic dynamical modelling
  • Operations research for decision making
  • Secure and reliable computing
  • Image analysis and computer graphics
  • Cognitive science and technology
  • Machine learning and signal processing
  • Financial engineering

You can also find an overview of which courses 17 students took. In the table, there is a column for each student, and the numbers indicate the semester on which the courses were taken.

You should be aware that your choice of courses in your individual study plan generally offers a high degree of flexibility. Therefore, you have every opportunity to design your own study programme and career by choosing from the wide range of courses offered at DTU.

In order to obtain the MSc degree in Mathematical Modelling and Computation the student must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have passed General Competence Courses adding up to at least 30 points
  • Have passed Technological Specialization Courses adding up to at least 30 points
  • Have performed a Master Thesis of at least 30 points within the field of the general program
  • Have passed a sufficient number of Elective Courses to bring the total number of points of the entire study up to 120.

Only applicants holding either a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. From September 2017 the bachelor degree must be less than 10 years old.

The individual MSc Eng programme states in detail which bachelor programmes qualify and whether applicants have to complete supplementary educational activities.

Requirements for supplementary educational activities can equate to up to 30 ECTS credits and are specified in the form of a list of courses under the individual MSc Eng programmes.

The specific requirements must be met before graduating from the bachelor programme or in connection with conditional admission to a particular MSc Eng programme. The courses must be passed prior to the commencement of studies within one year from the conditional admission.

Supplementary educational activities in connection with conditional admission to an MSc Eng programme do not form part of the MSc Eng programme, and partial tuition fees are charged. If the supplementary courses have not been passed within the deadlines specified, the conditional admission to the programme is withdrawn.

The Master of Science in Engineering programmes are offered in English. Therefore applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English (B-level, IELTS, TOEFL- or Pearson test).

Academic requirements for this programme

Bachelors from DTU

The following BSc Eng programmes at DTU entitle students to admission to the MSc Eng programme in Mathematical Modelling and Computation

  • Mathematics and Technology
  • Medicine and Technology
  • Physics and Nano Technology
  • Strategic Analysis and Systems Design

Bachelors from other universities

Students holding a BSc in Mathematics from other Danish universities are entitled to admission to the MSc Eng programme in Mathematical Modelling and Computation.

Other BScs in Engineering or BScs (Natural Science) must be able to document that they possess qualifications in mathematics, mathematical modelling, and computing corresponding to 45 ECTS credits.

Bachelors of Engineering may be admitted to the MSc Eng programme upon application. Individual assessments will be made as to whether applicants possess qualifications in mathematics, mathematical modelling, and computing corresponding to 45 points. The individual assessment may include a personal interview with the head of studies of the MSc Eng programme.
