Course Content
The first year lays the mathematical foundations and academic skills on which the rest of the course builds. You will also be able to change your mind about the direction you want to go by transferring between mathematics courses at the end of the first year, subject to satisfactory performance.
During the second year you will strengthen your knowledge of the common mathematical methods, broadening the statistical elements and have the opportunity to choose another module. Your study will have a strong practical emphasis in modern data analysis. In the final year you will contine your study of the above themes and also engage in a final year project carrying out in-depth statistical investigations in a field that interests you, under the weekly supervision of one of the departments statisticians.
Your timetable will be based on lectures, computer laboratory sessions and examples classes. We schedule weekly sessions where your module lecturers are available to provide support, and on top of group work sessions you will have regular personal tutorials. The Mathematics Support Centre is open seven days a week to provide you with one-to-one support. The centre also has specialist staff to provide extra support for dyslexic students.
You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.
