Description

Our professionally accredited three-year Mathematics and Statistics BSc Honours degree provides a firm foundation in the ideas and techniques of modern mathematics and statistics.

All our degrees focus on three core areas - pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics - and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select modules evenly across both mathematics and statistics. These include:

  • complex variable
  • statistical inference
  • foundations of probability

You can also choose optional modules linked to the research expertise of our staff and learn about the latest developments in the discipline, such as turbulence, quantum mechanics, and time series and forecasting.

Quality and ranking

Mathematics and Statistics at Newcastle achieved an impressive 92 per cent overall student satisfaction score in the National Student Survey 2013.

Course Content

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.

Our Mathematics and Statistics degrees all share a common set of modules in Stages 1 and 2, and a choice of optional modules in later Stages.

Your degree title will depend on the balance of mathematics and statistics modules studied after Stage 1. To qualify for the degree Mathematics and Statistics BSc Honours you must study at least 80 credits of mathematics modules and 80 credits of statistics modules during Stages 2 and 3.

Stage 1

Compulsory modules

  • MAS1041 Mathematical Methods A
