Curriculum

During the first 3 years, the subjects of general university education, liberals arts and fundamental and preclinical medicine are studied, which provide the students with knowledge on the structure and functions of healthy humans and ill persons bodies, needed for further studies. During the second part of the studies, students gain knowledge on the causes of diseases, their mechanisms, disease symptoms, diagnostic methods and general treatment principles.

The required practical skills are acquired when students complete the core clinical internship rotations during the sixth year.

Teaching method

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a method practiced by the Faculty of Medicine. PBL courses prompt students to analyse and solve problems, research, discuss and present hypothetical theories, solutions or recommendations in groups.

Evaluation of performance

Examinations are taken upon completion of each subject. The studies are completed by summative final theoretical and practical (at the bedside) examinations.

Competences you gain

Graduates in medicine will have the ability to:

· carry out a consultation with a patient;

· assess clinical presentations, order investigations, make differential diagnoses, and negotiate a management plan;

· provide immediate care of medical emergencies;

· prescribe drugs;

· apply ethical and legal principles in medical practice;

· assess psychological and social aspects of a patient's illness;

· apply the principles, skills and knowledge of evidence-based medicine;

· apply scientific principles, methods and knowledge to medical practice and research;

· promote health, engage with population health issues and work effectively in a health care system

After graduation

After successful completion of the programme and obtaining the diploma, students they can work in various biomedical areas of general practice. Graduates may also consider undertaking further residency studies, leading to a qualification of a specialist physician, or study for a PhD.

International students could be admitted into the English programme of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences if they provide the legalized high school or college certificate and transcript (officially translated into English) and meet the Entrance Exam requirements. Good grades in biology, chemistry and physics will give preference.Good knowledge of English language is obligatory.
