Students majoring in Middle Eastern Studies will be able to demonstrate language proficiency at the intermediate level (two years) or above in one of the Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish); an interdisciplinary foundational knowledge of the languages and cultures of the Middle East; and an understanding of key themes in Middle Eastern cultures, history, and contemporary social, economic, and political issues.

Majors will be able to engage in cross-cultural communication and understanding; analyze how stereotypes hinder intercultural understanding; think dynamically about the relationship between the United States and the developing world; and, initiate, research, and write a semester-length independent research paper.

Course Content

Core Middle Eastern Studies courses:
1. Introduction to the Modern Middle East
2. Historical Survey - One of the following three courses:
  • Islamic Civilization
  • History of the Modern Middle East
  • The Ottoman Empire
3. Senior Seminar - Senior Seminars in Middle Eastern Studies are offered every semester and focus on a particular topic, such as The United Nations and the Middle East; Women’s Movements in the Middle East; and The Middle East in Western Popular Culture and Mass Media.
Middle Eastern Language - Students can choose to study any of the following Middle Eastern languages:
  • Arabic
  • Hebrew
  • Persian
  • Turkish
