This programme provides a perfect route into analytic philosophy for graduates with degrees in philosophy or in cognate disciplines. Many students who complete the course go on to study for a PhD in Philosophy. Others find that the rigour, clarity and creative problem-solving abilities that a masters in philosophy demonstrates are greatly prized by employers in a wide range of careers, including law, journalism and management. Students in the course benefit from the UCD School of Philosophy's particular strengths in the inter-related areas of the philosophy of mind and psychology, the philosophy of language and the theory of knowledge.
The programme is available over 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. At the heart of the module are six taught modules, which may be taken in any order. Those taking the full-time programme in 2011-2012 must enrol in the following four modules:
Semester I:
* PHIL 40380 Mind & Language (Cathal Ó Madagáin)
* PHIL 40750 Realism and its Discontents (Maria Baghramian)
Semester II:
* PHIL40430 Philosophy of the Emotions (Rowland Stout)
* PHIL40880 Pragmatism (Jim O'Shea)
The remaining two modules may be taken from any others on offer by the School of Philosophy. See the descriptions on the right-hand menu.
In addition, all students must complete a 12-15,000-word dissertation by 17 August 2012. The admission requirements are the same as those for the MA Philosophy (general programme).
