This interdisciplinary course is designed for well-qualified graduates who wish to extend their interest in medieval studies. The flexible structure of the course allows students to construct their degree around their particular areas of interest, while acquiring both the technical expertise to investigate primary medieval documents and an insight into the complexities of medieval culture generally. Students will have the opportunity to be taught not only by Trinity staff but also by visiting lecturers from other internationally renowned institutions.

Students take four core courses: Research Methodology; Medieval Thought; Medieval Culture and Society; and a language chosen from: Elementary Classical Latin, Medieval Latin, Old English, Middle English, Italian, Medieval German, Medieval French, Old Irish.

Two options are also chosen. Currently the subject areas include: Chaucer; Language and Genre; Varieties of Comedy in Dante and Boccaccio; 'Wild' Women in Medieval Literature; Old English Prose; Arthurian H; Courtly love song in Medieval Europe, Early Medieval Ireland; Text and Image; Old English Heroic Poetry; The Unruly Middle Ages; Medieval Philosophy.

The course will be of one calendar year's duration. It will comprise six modules taught during Michaelmas and Hilary Terms, and a research project written up in a dissertation. Four of the six modules are core courses each of 18 hours duration*. The remaining two modules are options each of 18 hours duration and selected by the students and taught in the Hilary Term**. The taught modules will therefore be organized as follows:
Michaelmas Term: 3 core courses running throughout the term * = 7 hours per week
Hilary Term: 2 options each of 18 hours duration plus 1 core course of 22 hours duration ** = 6 hours per week
Summer Period: work towards dissertation. The choice of dissertation topic and preliminary work will take place in Hilary Term.

Total no. of contact hours (excluding supervision of dissertation and language courses): 90 or more depending upon choice of course.
*Exception: some of the language core courses will comprise more than 18 hours and, in the case of Old Irish, will run over two terms.
**Exception: all of the options offered in Irish run for 24 hours over the full 2 terms, i.e. for the full academic year. Dantean Echoes, which is a Comparative Literature option offered to students on this MPhil, runs in Michaelmas Term.
