The Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS) program at the University of Duisburg-Essen offers students an in-depth interdisciplinary education focusing on the cultural, political, economic, and social dynamics of East Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and the broader region. Designed for students interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of East Asian societies, history, and contemporary developments, this program combines linguistic proficiency with critical analysis and research skills. Throughout the course of study, students explore key themes such as modern history, political systems, cultural transformations, and economic growth, supported by a broad spectrum of academic disciplines including sociology, history, political science, and area studies.

The program emphasizes language acquisition, with courses in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, enabling students to engage directly with primary sources and conduct field research. Students are encouraged to develop intercultural competence and nuanced perspectives about East Asian countries and their global roles. The curriculum includes a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, and project work, fostering both independent research and collaborative learning environments.

Students in the MEAS program have opportunities for internships, study exchanges, and participation in Asian studies conferences and events, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experiences. The program aims to prepare graduates for careers in international relations, regional studies, diplomatic service, business, journalism, or further academic research. With a focus on critical thinking, linguistic skills, and regional expertise, the Modern East Asian Studies program equips students with the necessary tools to navigate and analyze the complex dynamics of East Asia in a globalized world.

Educational organisation

The structure of the Master's Programme MA MEAS includes interdisciplinary and discipline-specific modules focusing on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean studies. Discipline-specific methodological training is both integrated into the region-specific modules and offered as separate modules. The Master's thesis is an independent piece of research about a cutting-edge topic on contemporary East Asia which provides proof of knowledge and competencies gained in theoretical, methodological and regional East Asian studies, as well as language skills.
In the case of the MEAS+1 (for students with 180 ECTS credits from their previous degree or those not fulfilling other admission requirements), candidates take additional courses worth 60 ECTS in East Asian regional studies and economic and social sciences. During this year, students have the opportunity to maintain or improve their language skills.
